Hello all, I just thought you may be interested in knowing that this movie is coming out in a few months. "300" is a movie about the battle of Thermopylae, where as many of us know, was the origin of the phrase "MOLON LABE".

Whats better is that the man directing the project is Zack Snyder, the very pro-gun director of the "Dawn of the Dead" remake. Perhaps we will get a "MOLON LABE" or at least a "Come and take them" in the movie somewhere???

"300" is based on Frank Miller's ("Sin City") graphic novel of the same name. The movie will have a stylized look, but not quite as extreme as "Sin City". Early reports are that the movie is spectacular to watch, and very gory (it will definitely get an "R" rating).

I know that we don't have a general discussion forum for things such as movies, but I figured that this movie deals with the origin of MOLON LABE and is headed by one of the very few pro-gun directors that I know of in Hollywood. Hopefully this isnt seen as being off topic.

So what say you, THR... anyone else pumped for this flick???

I am looking forward to this movie.

BUT

This is Hollywood, so don't be surprised if instead of "Come and get them!" you hear "Come and get it!" or "Come get some!".

well

There is already a movie about Thermopylae called the 300...it is old but in color.

How they let the guy who made sin city direct this is beyond me:rolleyes: I bet the action will be as ridiculous as "kill bill"

A better director would help. And it should be based off of gates of fire It really is the best book ever; Pressfield is a great author.

It's to bad they didn't get the guy who directs "Rome" for HBO It's by far the most accurate non documentery show about rome I've seen....for crying out loud even the way they bathe is historically accurate:neener:

Zach Snyder's remake of "Dawn of the Dead" was much better than the original, while keeping beliveability rather high once you got past the zombies. The weapons were what a person could expect to find in such a situation. He nixed several brought up by the props department, the typical Hollywood MP5's and Desert Eagles and such. Heck, the good guys didn't even get any Glocks untill the got into Andy's Guns. Glocks are like fleas on a mutt in hollywood these days!

I think he will keep the realisim high in this movie. He did not direct "Sin City", (but I liked that one) and lots of people did not understand what Terrentino was accompishing with "Kill Bill", (liked that one too) and I expect this movie to be like neither. What I expect is more along the lines of "Gladiator", or the older "300" movie moderenized (made more gorry).

Read (re-read) the first post before you post (the movie is based off of the graphic novel "300", written by Frank Miller, who also wrote the "Sin City" graphic novel. It is not directed by the same person). Zach Snyder is a freind of the 2nd, and I have every faith his efforts in "300" will be every bit as well thought out as was his "Dawn of the Dead" was.

Yes, it is a different director than from "Sin City", however, both "Sin City" and "300" are based on graphic novels by Frank Miller. I'm sorry if I was confusing in my wording.

While I liked (not loved) "Sin City", 300 seems to be much more serious and graphic than that movie. The stills and concept art show a stylized look, but not as radical as "Sin City". Like I said, the early buzz has completely blown people away in its visuals, gore and story.

Whether he has publicly stated so or not, the director, Zack Snyder seems very pro-gun. If you listen to his commentary on the "Dawn of the Dead" remake, he talks about guns alot. He even says things like "Anyone who shoots knows that a head shot while running is next to impossible, but it makes for a better scene" and "Here they go again, never missing...". If I'm not mistaken, he also said something about fingers being on triggers. He also talks about making sure that the guns used were realistic given the situation. I was shocked listening to the commentary for the first time. The man seems to be both be very knowledgeable about, and enjoy the topic of firearms.

So much so that I wouldnt be surprised if we get a scene involving Molon Labe...

well

Well, I seem like a fool now:barf:

Anyway this is some what on topic... I heard there was going to be gladiator 2 and even saw an article about it. This was a year ago...anyone know ayhting about it?

Sounds Greek to me...LOL....

I read about 300 in the UK film magazine; Empire. I have doubts about how "300" soldiers can fight an army of 400,000 but I guess we will see in 03/2007, ;) .

PS: Knowing that Troy, Alexander and the HBO/BBC tv series Rome were not big hits, I don't think 300 will be much better.

...

In real life they had 7000 allies if I remember right (god know's I've been wrong before) But the spartans get all the credit.

You are forgetting something though. Gladiator was a hit. And I think kingdom of heaven did ok.

And rome is without question the best show ever:scrutiny:

Sorry for any grammar errors.

The Movie "300" will be shot-for-shot, line-for-line faithful to the comic book just like "Sin City" was.

I have the comic and I was very disappointed that MOLON LABE was not in the book. The line "come and get it" is used in a monologue and has nothing to do with throwing down their spears. I hope the line will be used in context but I highly doubt it.

Also, as far as gore and violence goes, the theatrical trailer has been set back for re-editting due to gore and nudity (probably male-nudity if the book is any indication.)

This is going to be a great movie but don't expect historical accuracy. You will be disappointed.

Oh yeah, and the older movie about Thermopylae is called "the 300 spartans". I've been meaning to rent it.

"In real life they had 7000 allies if I remember right (god know's I've been wrong before) But the spartans get all the credit."

Yeah an interesting note on wikipedia...

The Spartans were required by their law to stay and fight. The Thespians could have turned and left and nothing bad would have happened to them but they chose to stay and fight. Not that the Spartans aren't incredibly brave but the Thespians should get alittle credit too.

In the comic "300", and most likely in the movie too, the Thespians are specifically shown running away.

Some more. Kinda sounds like the Litlle Big Horn.

The Greek army, led by King Leonidas of Sparta, was about ten thousand strong and in position at Thermopylae, when the Persians arrived. Xerxes was incredulous that they would take a stand against his immense army. After impatiently waiting four days while warning them to surrender, he launched a massive attack. The Greeks, as at the Battle of Marathon, initially retreated drawing the Persian army into the narrow pass. Then they turned and waged a furious battle against the limited number of Persian who had entered the pass, thoroughly routing them. Time and again the attacking Persians, including the elite immortals, were unable to get through.
This kind of sounds like the 605 or the 710 to the 10 or

On the movie website there is a vid of the physical conditioning. Hard core, body weight exercises, sled-tire pulling, kettlebells etc... The actors are building real world functional fitness not puffy muscles like body builders. If the rest of the movie has this attention to detail and dedication it should be good. Not having a close variant of Molon Labe would really piss me off though, it is a made for Hollywood line already.

Sure, Travolta as lead, Samuel L. as his "Personal Guard".

The Samuel L. line we all want to hear, "Pass me my sheild. The one that says "Bad Mutha *****" on it."

Travolta sample line; "You know in France they have sex with sheep and mayonase."

Or, "Man, I just got back to Greece, not even here a week and some ******* keyed my chariot. Everyone knows you dont **** with a mans chariot."

But the best would be Samuel L.'s ending speech as the last man standing; "I used to say 'MOLON LAVE!' to a motha ***** right before I killed him. It means come and get them, and then I'd give it to them alright, in the stomach, across the throat, where ever, what ever it took. I used to think it was just some cold blooded **** to put down in Greek on a mutha ***** right before I killed him. But now I realize that it is more than that. What it means is that Greece will never surrender her freedom to anyone. Not the Carthagians, not the Trojans, and certianly not to any Persian mutha *****!
MOLON LAVE! MUTHA *****S! Lets finish this ****."

And fade away as Samuel L. goes down swinging under the Persian onslaught.

I guess I get a little goofy when I have insomnia this bad.:D

The Guy...

LOL, my friend, LOL....

But on a more serious note, this movie stars a bunch of relative no-names. No Afflecks, Pitts or Cruises in this flick. Just a bunch of monstruous men and buff warriors. Probably a flick you wouldnt have to argue with too much over bringing a wife or gf to.

Historically inaccurate as all get out. Still looks like an entertaining two hours...

The Guy...

You one crazy mutha*****! (LOL)

"In real life they had 7000 allies if I remember right (god know's I've been wrong before) But the spartans get all the credit."

Yeah, nobody remembers the 700 THESPIANS!

I saw the "300" trailer and it looks HORRIBLE. You'd have to be a purile teenager to get any pleasure out of it. It's overhyped, overstylized, and oversexed. It's too loud and with far too much reliance on substandard CGI and wire stunts. Is that thing supposed to be a wolf? Because I've seen wolves and they don't look like that. And why the devil do they insist on launching everyone through the air and screaming every line at the top of their lungs?

Here's Milius' nod to the battle. Ah for the days before the #%#@@ greenscreens

REAL horses, REAL sets, REAL people. Can't beat it, boyos!

It looks like the movie will be thoroughly enjoyable, and bitterly disappointing at the same time.

I read somewhere that they had plans to have the Gates of Fire made into a movie with George Clooney playing the role of Leonidas and Robert Deniro as Xerxes.

However, once they figured out how much it was going to cost them to make the film, they collectively wet themselves and decided to make 300 instead.

What a shame.

Perhaps. In a way, I am glad, as Hollywood likes to "improve" the books quite often.

Heheh. It will probably be to the real Spartans like "Jarhead" was to the real military. These M TV raised, comic book reading motha****** [/samuel l. jackson voice] :banghead:

I wanna see it now.

Looks like a war story. Embelished for effect, but still gets to the point.

I love listening to old vets talk, I dont get annoyed at obvious embelishments I think it's just creative reenactment.

What was with the Leonidas character mentioning freedom in the trailer? Sparta was anything but a free society.

I realize it is more dramatic, but I was under the impression that Spartan warriors wore armor like any other hoplites. Maybe some were special.
