My LR guru is on his way back from the 2015 Emerald Games and Creedmoor Cup matches at Tullamore, Ireland.
I note from the Emerald Game results that the high score at 1200 yards in F-Open with some worm burner round was one V better than in F-T/R with a .308; 68-4 vs 68-3.

That pretty much says it all.
In reality for shooting steel or paper the 300wm is more than most people want to deal with if shooting a good bit. No doubt its performance is great but if you aren't killing stuff it's more than needed. As shown in the emerald cup post a 308 can not only get to 1000 but beyond that and be competitive. 6.5's are great as are 7mm. I shoot a 243 and it has no problem at 1000 and even further. I personally have plenty of problems at those ranges, but it ain't the 243's fault!
