Ever since obama got into office, there has not been a box of 22lr in perry county, TN.(the last box of CCI minimags went for $60.00, 2 years ago.) I have a 30-06 and a .308 Winchester SMLE no#2.
I have ordered a 150 grain lee mold, and have both h-4895 and unique powder. but all I can find tells me to use 10-12 grains of unique for the 30-06, but nothing on the .308 Winchester. I have reloading manuals, but they only list full power loads. I need loads for small game. I'm asking for your help, because I know if there is anywhere on earth that has the knowledge, it is on THR.
The ammo shortage has taught me that a 22 without bullets is a club. I'm going center fire. Thanks in advance.

any thoughts on H-4895?
I'm sure H4859 will work fine but I like much faster rifle powders for cast bullets.

I always shot a lot of lead bullets in the 30-30 but over the past few years I have been shooting them in the 30-06 too. Over the years I've used a lot of SR4759 for cast bullets and light rifle loads and more recently I've been loading with AA5744 too.

The Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook doesn't show any of the 4895 powders in the .308 or 30-06.
With a 150gr Lee bullet mold #C309-150F they do show Unique loads in both.
For the .308 12.8gr to 19.5gr Unique
For the 30-06 17.0gr to 21.7gr Unique
If that's the same Lee mold you bought that data is valid for you and tested by Lyman.
I hope that helps a little...

The mold was a LEE C309-150-F 30 Caliber. the reason I ask about H-4895, is because it and unique are all I have on hand right now, and there is no re-supply to date within 100 miles. How much would you use of the H-4895 for a light load for small game.
I plan on using 10 grains of unique, and would also like to have loads for H-4895.
Thank You so much, for your help. my last trip to jackson,tn. Gander mountain only had wads for 12 gauge shells, in their reload section. no powders, no primers, no brass or hulls, and no bullets. wallie world employes get the ammo as soon as it comes in, it never makes the shelves, Bass Pro is bone dry, they sell out within an hour of the stock coming in, and my local hardware/hunting supply store, hasn't received an ammo order in 3 years, so I am having to make do with what I have on hand. next will be BP loads until the primers run out.

Steven- Check the Reloaders Bench in Nashville. They will not ship but I have found that they have nearly everything in stock I could want.

They are in Mt Juliet just the other side of Nashville. It would be worth your drive but of course call them first.

Locally, cases of 22 rimfire are showing up here. They aren't even putting it behind the counters anymore.

According to Lyman 10gr is way too light a charge with that 150gr bullet. Be very careful you don't stick a bullet in the barrel. I would go with the min charge listed in the Lyman manual that I posted above. I double checked the numbers and I did write them correctly.

You're NOT going to stick a 150 gr. cast bullet in a .308 or 30-06 using 10 grs, of Unique. I've using tiny charges of powder such as Red Dot to fire lap a .308 barrel. I mean like 3.0 grs. so 10.0 grs. of Unique is fine. In fact I'd back off of it if you're going to hunt edible game with the load lest ye turn your table fare inside out!

So you don't think it's a good idea to be vigilant when shooting a 30-06 round loaded with 40% less powder than the recommended starting load?

Steve what are you classifying as small game? If you are taking about beaver, bobcat, coyote, fox, groundhog, mink, muskrat, nutria, opossum, river otter, raccoon, skunk, and weasel then fine just make sure it is not FMJ ammo. If you are talking rabbit and squirrels and any other small game in Tennessee that is not listed above I'd drive to the gun show in Dickson on the February 8th and 9th and while there check at Wal-Mart, the Dickson Sportsman Store to see if they have any .22's before I'd get myself in hot water for using centerfire ammo on small game. It is illegal to use centerfire on any small game that is not listed above in Tennessee. Shoot if nothing goes wrong I'll be going to the show that Saturday and I'd give you a hundred rounds if you meet me there in Dickson that day.

Prudence in any reloading endeavor is important.

A few years ago I did quite a bit of experimenting with cast bullets in .30 caliber rifles, must mostly loading the 7.5x55 whose case capacity is only a tiny bit less than the '06. By bullet was/is a 155 gr. cast FP from an NEI mould. My goal was to run it subsonic because I used the load primarily for reduced course High Power competition, so all the bullet had to do was be accurate and poke a hole in a piece of paper at 100 yds.

For a while I used 8.0 grs. of Red Dot but finally settled on 6.5 grs. of Bullseye which netted a little under 1100 fps. I seem to recall having tried light charges of Unique, but I'll have to check.

Point is, 10.0 grs. is fine. If you're concerned, start with the starting load and incrementally work your way down. I think you'll find 10.0 grs of Unique will run around 1200 fps. Heck, if I can get a few spare minutes this weekend, I'll load some of them myself and chronograph them.

BTW, I wouldn't mess 4895. It'll work, but reduced loads of medium burning rifle powder usually give pretty wide swings in velocity.

I'm not able to travel to Dickson.
I have 3 22LR rifles, can't get ammo for them. simply can't afford it.
the high cost and the lack of rim fire ammo, as well as the fact that at this time, thanks to obama, a rim fire rifle is about as useful as a club, dictates that I have to use what is available and makes since to use. I can't afford $450.00 for a 32 cal black powder rifle, won't pay $60.00 for a 100 ct box of CCI mini mags. the smallest caliber rifle I have left to work with is a 3006, or a 308. I did not set up the circumstances the federal government did. if they want me to use 22lr, then they are going to have to stop the backdoor gun ban, buy causing the ammo shortage. people do what they have to do to survive. just last night I put 30 dollars worth of gas in my truck, I got 9 gallons, that will only take me about 117 miles. before obama, it would have only cost $17.01. I just had to pay a $250.00 deductible on a bottle of pills that just a month ago cost $20.00, thanks to obama. thanks to the obama admin, and the raise in taxes, I lost an extra $3000.00 to the government. I haven't had a raise in 10 years, nor a vacation, afraid to take a sick day, because If I loose my job, there won't be another. the unemployment rate here is 19%, been there since 2008, has not changed. I hunt to help replace some of the meat, I can't afford to buy, thanks to the governments take away from the working and give to the lazy programs, and to fund the presidents multimillion dollar vacations, while lecturing us on income in equality. just since obama came into office, I have gone from paying all my bills and having a years pay in savings, to living hand to mouth, and I did not change a thing, I don't spend one dime I didn't before. the government and the high prices brought on by their stupid green energy crap and anti gun crap have forced this situation. I will hunt rabbits and squirrels, with a 45-70, if that is what it takes to put food on the table. so please either be helpful, or go away! sorry to be blunt, but if I want a lecture I would have watched the state of the union!

Steven, I just remember having seen .30 caliber round balls loaded in cartridges such as the 308 or 30-06. A primer, a pinch of powder and a little lead ball and you have a fantastic mall game load. Head over to the Cast Boolit site as I'll promise someone over there has done it!

Thanks MBoop good info. and thank you guys. sorry about the blow up, but I'm so tired of people telling me about the rules. I have followed the rules all my life. never taken a dime from the government, always paid my own way, and now that I am old and should be looking forward to retirement, the government and the changing rules, seem to be determined to put me in the poor house and take away what little happiness I have left.
can't afford to go anywhere, can't afford to drive to work, can't afford to walk out on my 60 acres and hunt a d-mn squirrle. funny that the house I bought in memphis for $78,000.00, will only sell for $35,000.00,because of the housing bubble, but the property tax on the farm land that I paid $32,000.00 for 15 years ago, the same time as the house in memphis, has been reappraised for $120,000, and the taxes raised accordingly. and no improvements have been made to the property. makes you wonder.

I wasn't trying to lecture at all, I was trying to keep you out of any trouble while offering to give you a hundred rounds of ammo for free until you could find some. If I had a car I would bring them to you we have property there in Perry county at Crooked Creek. But I am disabled and don't have a car and I have to depend on others to get around.

You can send ammo UPS and Fedex, no hazmat fee, not special handling, no extra charges. I think you can mail it too but I'm not completely sure about the US Mail.

I apologize about the blow up.
Thanks for trying to look out for me. I appreciate it. just getting fed up with the government creating problems and then blocking every solution they can think of, in order to justify their job as regulators. Sorry for taking it out on you.

I checked with Duncan's hardware about ammo again today. they told me they talked with a supplier in N.C. and they may get a shipment in march. I check walmart every saturday, they only have oddball stuff, none of the normal stuff. 22,38,45 acp, or LC, no 380, 9mm,no 223, 3006,308. this shortage has become the new norm, I'm affraid it will be just like the gas. those in power don't want us to have it so they price it out of our range to afford it.

I wouldn't say that's the case at all. It has to be where you are located. I have no issue finding ammo at good prices or reloading supplies and fair values. But Im in Houston and my choice of places to buy from is probably different than yours. I mentioned earlier for you to check out that place in Nashville. Its just over an hour from you. I bet they have what you need.

No shipping ammunition thru the US Mail.

H4895 is a pretty versatile rifle powder for reduced loads, but you apparently want really reduced loads. Unique is going to be a better choice for those.

Cast lead is a better choice that jacketed, less likely to stick those in a rifle barrel.
Biggest issue with pistol powders in a rifle case is possible overcharging (double or triple charge) and positional sensitivity. Since Unique ignites pretty easily, you should be fine on positional sensitivity.

I'll try and dig up the article on H4895 for reduced rifle loads for you (a bit later).

I know I feel the same way sometimes and it is ok. That being said PM me your shipping info and I'll PIF you some ammo Monday if nothing goes wrong.
