NOT!

.308 is POOR ballisticly compared to even a .30-06!

.270 even worse.

Magnums? .308 Winchester is as obsolete as a Studebaker!

.308 Winchester is an obsolete cartridge that can't even hold the jock strap for a .30-06.

7MM Remington Magnum is a FAR BETTER sniper round than even a suicide over pressure .308!

(Sanitized on account of confusion about what website in which author was posting. :), Art.)

As far as I know the .308 is very similiar to the .30-06 except that the .308's case length is shorter. But it has similiar (though a tad less energy) ballistics to the .30-06, does it not??

Ballistics aren't some voodoo science. They are a simple result of pressure curves, case capacity, caliber, bullet weight, barrel length, etc. The poster should remember that the .308 was designed to nearly duplicate the 30-06 150gr load in a shorter case. Why this is a quandry is beyond me. Shorter, smaller capacity case running at higher pressures will come cose, but not meet the larger case. Being shorter, it has less ability to use larger bullets and cannot be pushed as much as the parent cartridge.

There are so many cases based on this case. Remember that hundreds of cartridges are based on the 8x57 Mauser round of around 1888. Cartridges of this same rim and base diameter have been shortened, lengthened, blown out, necked down, had steep shoulders, shallow shoulders, minimal taper, lots of taper, short neck, long neck cases. These cases have been made from brass, steel, aluminum, and even plastic. They shoot sabot, blank, shot, tracer, explosive, wooden, plastic, frangible, solid, hollow-point, and ball ammo. Such wonders as the 22-250, 35 Whelen, 30-06, 243, and 7.92x33mm Kruz were all based on the SAME CARTRIDGE. Give me a rest, there's nothing wrong with the cartridge whatever you do with it

That's kinda what I was thinkin' ;)

.308
.30-06
.270

Everyone KNOWS they're way underpowered & couldn't kill any game larger than a well-fed nutria...

Besides, what do guys like Cooper, O'Connor, Keith, Patton, the Green Berets, and the entire US Marine Corps know anyway?...

(Some people...:banghead: )

.308 is a great caliber. In it you can have anything from a 30-30 lever action, a 7.62x51 semi auto, .30-06, .300 Win Mag, 300 Weatherby or even the ungodly overbore .30-378.

I would say that the .308 Winchester is a quite capable cartridge though. ;)

To quote a moderator here on THR:

"The difference between .308 and .223 on humans is mostly of concern to worms."

That's funny. You left out the 32acp and the 30 carbine.

All being said above leads me to believe that the only cartridge to have is a .700 nitro express in the full auto 10/22 rig

Why hasn't this thread been closed yet? It is serving absolutely no purpose in my mind other than wasting server space and bandwidth.

The thread is still open 'cause after that initial bit which Art kindly tailored, everyone's been civil. So long as it stays that way, it will remain open. :)

We don't require threads have a purpose -- only that they stay polite.

If the 308 is vastly inferior... then what about the .223?!!!

There is nothin that that the 223 can kill that the 308 can't, and there are plenty the 308 can kill that the 223 won't be able to.

As far as a purpose for the thread.. However useless, I find this thread to be more educational that most public schools... :p

Eh, maybe. But all that aside, the .308 has a lot of personality.

Personality goes a long way :)

The .308 is the round people go to when they graduate from the mouse gun ranks and don't want to deal with the monster magnums or the "obscure" long action calibers.

Sounds as if someone is

I missed the initial comments. Could a moderator post them again? :p

I like my 2 .308,s and I interchange bullets and powder with my 4 .30-06s and one 7.5x55.

As far as Zorro goes, congratulations on your new ephinany. I hope it brings you joy.
