Can I put any .308 muzzle brake on a 6.8 AR? I am getting a new 6.8 and found a really nice muzzle brake but it only comes in .308.

I would imagine it could be mounted on there with an adapter of some sort, but it's effectiveness as a brake will be reduced a bit, you looking for style or are you looking for real recoil reduction? The larger the gaps around the bullet the less effective the brake will be seeing as it is allowing pressurized gas to bypass the braking mechanism.

I'm looking for performance first. If it looks good and performs well than that's even better.

Then I would try to find a stylish brake for a 6.8mm bore, I don't know how much braking force you would loose with a larger bore hole through it but in theory you would have to loose some. Wild shot in the dark 10-20% loss depending on the design of the brake.

It will not be easy to find a 6.8mm brake that will match one that you have found to your liking. I would get the .308 brake and be happy, it will work well for you.

Sent from my HTC One X

If your barrel has the corresponding threads (5/8x24, which is very common but not universal for 6.8 SPC barrels) then it will work just fine. In theory there will be a slight loss of performance vs. a brake with the bullet hole sized for the 6.8, but I doubt you would notice any difference if you had two such brakes that you could test side by side.

That brake will probably have horrendous blast, FYI.

The 6.8 doesnt kick hard enough to warrant putting a brake on it. You are going to add length and weight and gain very little especially if it is on an AR with a buffer. I would put a thread protector or a cheap flash hider on the end if it were my gun.

...very little....other than the ability to shoot faster, more accurately.

Why do you think a brake or comp would be less effective on an AR than other rifles?

It will be effective for recoil.but the recoil is so light that you might not need it. I ordered my 6.8 with a Target crown, no threads. Couldn't be happier. Don't waste your money. Get a thread cap.

Yup, it's brake, not break. You're braking the recoil, not breaking wind. :neener:

It should do just fine, but a brake designed for high volumes of gasses may not work as well with a lower-powered cartridge. A high-flow brake may not give the same level of resistance as one with smaller fins spaced closer together. You might try looking into a muzzle brake designed for an intermediate instead.

Flash hiders are illegal on AR 15s here in Connecticut.

Um, sort of, but not really. Read the regulations. You can have one if it is pinned or welded on... (or if the rifle is bolt action...)

If you got the LWRC that you were looking for, they should have the same threads and fit fine. As Kachok indicated, any gas that slips past the bullet won't be diverted perpendicular to provide any "braking" action. It will still be functional, ie soft shooting and performance test your hearing protection.

Many use .308 brakes, but there are a few 6.8 versions out there. Here is an MSTN http://www.precisionreflex.com/Detail.aspx?PROD=186720&CAT=4212 AR Perfomance did make several models but recently relocated and does not have inventory.
