Lee Interchangeable dies

Frequently, dies from one caliber may be used to load other calibers. Due to the locations of crimping shoulders, the operation may only work for dies of the shorter caliber to the longer. You may notice a label depicting the shorter die in your set for the longer version of the cartridge, we do this to reduce costs.

Even though some dies are interchangable, in many cases, different shellholders are necessary. You can see a complete list of shellholders under "Case Preparation" then "Shellholders and Calibers".

45 Colt - 454 Casull *
44 Special - 44 Magnum
38 Special - 357 Magnum
30-30 Winchester - 30 Remington
357 Magnum - 357 Maximum
38 Super - 9mm Largo
44 Russian - 44 Special
40 Smith & Wesson - 10mm - 41 Action Express
32 Smith & Wesson - 32 S&W Long - 32 H&R Magnum **

*The 45 Colt expander die will also work for the 454 Casull by backing the die out approximately two turns to compensate for the difference in case length.

**Our dies allow the use of .308 bullets in the 32 H&R Magnum. The other bullet diameter commonly used is .311 and that is the expander that comes with the set. To use .308 bullets, it is necessary to purchase an additional expander and turn it down to .308. This can be done using a drill press and emery cloth or if you buy the additional expander from the factory, we will do it for $10.00.

I am using a 32 S&W long die to size my 32 S&W brass and a 32 ACP die to seat my bullets. The 32 long seating die was too long and would not seat with any type of crimp. These are Lee carbide 4 die sets I am using. The 32 ACP sizing die will probably work but I have not tried it yet. Keep in mind that the 32 ACP uses a taper crimp and not a roll crimp but the lee die will give a slight roll to the round and it will not move when using trail boss and lead bullets for me. I am not sure if the Lee Loader uses the same sizing as the regular dies but someone else may have tried this and know for sure.

Rim thickness is different. So a Lee "hammer" classic loader might have a problem if you hammer the larger rimmed case in to the 32auto die fully. So only size what you need to size, and load. Compare cartridges here > http://www.stevespages.com/page8d.htm I did a quick look, so i might be wrong.

Did this information come from a Lee book or web site or some other source?

I sure wish I could member all this stuff.

Thanks.

Thanks, FROGO207, for sharing your method. I will eventually get equipped with a press. and be using the die sets. For now, I am collecting the Lee Loaders.

I think you are correct. I'll figure it out, as time rolls on. [If I live long enough.] My Dad used to say "Ye live and learn, but, by the time ye get good at what ye learned, yur too old to do it or ye up and die."

Thanks for the link. I already had it, but did not think to look at it.

I have/do load for the .32acp, .32S&W, .32S&W Long, .32H&R magnum and .327mag with the same .32acp dies. The .32acp uses a #7B shellholder, and the "rimmed" brass uses the #4 shell holder which BTW is the same as the .223, .222Remington, .222RemMag, ect....

The Lee standard seating/crimp die uses a "modified" taper crimp die, that if sufficient crimp is applied becomes a "roll crimp".

In fact, I just delivered an S&W .32 Hand Ejector to a friend along with several hundered .32S&W cases loaded with a 78gr RN that I cast for the .32acp. I had to replace the bolt, as well as stake the bolt slots on the cylinder and peen the hand to correct a timing problem the gun had. It now, with my hand load will shoot poi/poa at 7yds into a coke bottle cap!!! As fast as you can pull the trigger!! Recoil is negligible. As is muzzle blast with 1.2gr of Bullseye and a 78gr RN. I bet it'd hurt to get shot with it !!!

In fact, the .32 H-E would chamber/fire/eject the .32acp as well as .32S&W AND .32 Long. I didn't have sufficient brass for the Long and elected to retain the brass. He had ~100rds of fired .32S&W that I really enjoyed loading and shooting. It's like a reloadable .22 rim-fire!

As GooseGestapo posted, it certainly can be done. It is nice to have separate dies to keep from re-adjusting them all the time though.

The Lee standard seating/crimp die uses a "modified" taper crimp die, that if sufficient crimp is applied becomes a "roll crimp".

I bought a a Lee Taper Crimp die for .32 Long that I shortened to taper crimp my .32 ACP rounds with, and I am using the Lee .32 ACP crimp die with its "modified" crimp ledge to "roll" crimp .32 Mag.

I have used my Lyman 32 ACP dies to load 32 S&W long ammo for my H&R revolver. There have been no issues, except the needed adjustments between the two calibers.
