357 Magnum Load

I bought Blue Dot to use in my .41 Mag.. I really liked it. Then Alliant told us to stop loading it in all loads in the .41 Mag. But, it is still okay in the .357. Blue Dot makes real nice midrange loads with good fill under a 158 grain bullet.

FYI,

They gave a warning about using it in 357mag with 125gr bullets as well.

This is an interesting conversation. I think I've squeezed about all the oomph out of my 4 inch barrel with 15.0 grains of h110 and a 158 grain bullet I can. My chronograph read 1098 fps. That is roughly 100 fps below the published Hornady data. I am looking to try 2400 or AA#9 and working up with a 140 grain bullet.

I am strongly resisting the urge to buy a carbine in .357. You gents aren't helping....

I got a ruger 77/357 last month to pair with my 6" gp100. Haven't got to test it out yet due to kung flu but I have plenty of lever guns and wanted to try something different , a bolt action detachable magazine 357 is different. Hope it likes the same loads as my revolver.

Well, the Hornady data was from a 8" barrel, so....

Exactly. I think that I am only 100 fps low is close enough.

If your not getting cabine velocity out of a 4" your not trying hard enough. ;) I dont go above listed max in pistol because I dont think I can read pressure signs the same as bottle neck rifle.

While it is about the pressure, for me it is about the inefficiency. I would rather use a little less powder to get the same velocity if I can. On the other hand, when I shoot that load out of my snubnose the fireball is visible in full sunlight.

When I worked up loads in 44mag, I noticed that I got the same velocity with N-110, with a little less charge, and a LOT less flash and bang, when compared to H-110.

I just worked up a load yesterday using 125gr xtp and 2400 . 17gr was my best load . Felt pretty hot but still had some unburned powder left in the case . I think 125gr is a tad light for such a slow powder . My buddy said I had a huge flame bursting from everywhere around the gun , muzzle and cylinder gap . Im still going to use that load but may only use it during the day . Flash may be a bit much in low light .

You may want to watch for flame cutting in that situation, it may not take long to damage your top strap

Good point , and will keep it in mind . This load is not for range fun but rather SD . I won’t be shooting it much i just have about 200 -125gr XTP bullets I need to do something with .

I’ll load them up and just put them away or maybe just have the load in my rotation if ever need be.

I do have a Ruger LCP/R ( I always forget which is the revolver ) I could load them for I guess but I rarely shoot that gun .
