I'm looking for a 357mag (158gr@1075fps) loading using 38spl cases. I don't own a 38 pistol so there is no danger in a mix up. I need the load to make major in USPSA. Anyone have or use such a load?

Use the above websites and take the 357 data and back it off 10% to work in a 38 case.

Even though older manuals gave high velocity 38 loads, please stay with 357 cases.I have reloaded over 30 years. It not worth the gamble on life or injury to yourself or others. The sport is not worth the risk. Byron

I've thought about trying this for IDPA--to shoot a moonclipped 357 in ESR, just for kicks. I think I'd start with 158 gr plated RN bullets (rainier or berrys) and between 5 and 6 grains of Unique and walk it up, watching for problems. I expect you'd get there around 6.5.

That assumes you've got a good .357 revolver, known, quality brass, a chronograph, and experience making, shooting and monitoring high-pressure loads. If you don't have ALL those things, then forget it.

A few years back I worked up a load for a S&W 38-44 Heavy Duty with a 4" barrel and fixed sites. It shot 3 feet low with standard ammo and that just didn't get it. First I chose a 180 grain Remington HP bullet. I figured that would get the muzzel up. I used H4227 and just started adding powder till it hit to the point of aim. It ended up being 12.5 grains :fire: for a muzzel velocity of 1050fps. This load seems mild in this gun (a heavy N frame 38 Special developed for the 38 Super Police load). I looked up the specs in the Hodgdon no. 25 Powder Data Manual. It is 1.5 grains over 38 special +P recomended loading for the 38 Special and only .5 below the 357 mag load. Needless to say, this load has not been tested in my K-38's.

Now here is the surprise. While looking up this load for you I noticed that Hodgdons recomended 158 grain jacketed +P load for H4227 is 12.5 grains for 1050fps. Sounds like just what you are looking for. Be forwarned this book was puplished in 1986...but they were still publishing the same load in the number 26 edition in 1993. :)
