Hello,

new to reloading and new to this site.

I’ve got a couple Rossi 92s
The 20” barrel version has a long throat. It can almost chamber a full length 360 Dan Wesson.
360DW= 1.76 OAL and I chamber 1.71 no mods
Typical 360DW case trim length is 1.41
Without any mods I can cycle a COL max 1.650
In the future I might look to get the chamber reamed to 360 and then modify the lifter and guides so I can run full length 360DW.
Anywho, for the time being my question is:
if I trim 360 DW brass to 1.35 and seat an xtp 158 grain I can hit my 1.65 OAL, I did up some dummy rounds and all Is good. This puts my trimmed cases 0.06” longer then 357 magnum and 0.06” shorter than 360DW. I already have 100 brass to work with. how do I go about developing a load that’s safe to work up?
I’m exactly half way between standard 357 mag and 360DW case length

I've played this game. But I used 357 brass and 180 grain cast bullets or 180 xtps seated to the first cannelure.
If you use H110, find data for both cartridge seating depths and extrapolate.
Get ready for some brisk recoil and a substantial velocity increase.

I do have H110 and looking for some Alliant 2400
Alliant with 180 XTP looks pretty good on paper. Not sure if it will be as accurate as a slightly lighter load of H110. Heck 158 XTP at 1700 fps is plenty for deer but a 180 XTP at 1500+ seems like a short range winner.

Loaded long. You get better than 1500 fps. If I recall correctly. I was in the mid to high 1900s.

1900fps ! that would be something. That’s gotta be pushing 1500 ft/lbs of muzzle energy.
Yeah I’m sort of viewing it like long loading 38s to 357 length. instead I’m long loading 357 to my rifles max length.

The 20" barrel makes use of all the powder. I used the same brass for quite a few reloads without case head separation or loose primer pockets. It really is like comparing 38s to 357.
I would love to take the step to 357 max. But supposedly it will stretch the action. I like my R92 too much to risk it.

A bit late to the party but, if you load 158gr XTP-HP's in .360DW brass trimmed to 1.40", you come in at just under 1.71". The 180gr XTP loaded at its lower cannelure in Magnum brass comes in just under 1.70". Both allow you to use starting level .360DW data to develop loads.

You are pretty much at .357 Max levels from a DW revolver out of your 20” Rossi now. That is plenty of horsepower for deer-pigs at open sight ranges, no need to risk any gun damage .

Now you’re making me want to brew up some similars for my 16” Rossi ‘92. ;)

Stay safe.

Clean up that butt plate screw first. Mine left some wicked blood blisters.

How different are the 350 legend and the 357 max other than one headspaces intelligently.
The .357 Maximum is a straight forward lengthening of the .357 Magnum to 1.605". Maximum brass has a thicker web area (similar to a .223) for higher pressure. The best way to describe the .350 Legend is a 9mm case lengthened to 1.71" and given a .223 rim. I assume its web area is thicker as well. The Maximum uses .357" bullets; the Legend's are .355".

I don't know enough about the Legend to say but I've run the Max up to .35Rem velocities using the Cast Performance LBT 200gr. WFN-GC in a HandiRifle and it hits like a brick through a glass window. I can't see the Legend being any less than that or it wouldn't be catching on like it is.

I agree wholeheartedly! Bullet placement is the only real factor once you get past 1300fps with a .35 caliber bullet. I have seen round nose hard cast Linotype bullets pinhole deer and they still dropped like they were hit by lightning when the bullet goes cross-ways through the heart muscle. I've also seen them run a hundred yards after the same/similar shot. Adrenaline is scary stuff! I would say play safe and don't take a chance on harming your rifle - but then again, I'm the guy who had an SB2 HandiRifle in .357Mag reamed to .357Max so, it'd be kinda hypocritical for me to do that. ;)
