Got out to shoot today, shot the 148 DEWCs with 2.7 gr Bullseye, also shot the 158 LRNs with 3.5 bullseye. both loads worked fine, relatively light, the wife even shot my LCRX snubnose with the 148s in and said she didnt mind the recoil. She thougt it was about the same as her .380 in recoil maybe even a little less.
loads shot fine, didnt have a bench but I was able to keep them in a fist sized group from ~15 yards.
Also shot both from my 1873 .357 SAA clone 4.75 barrel, and they worked just fine in that pistol as well.
Thanks again for all the advice on building these rounds. now I get to clean the brass and load em again.
I see the Lyman's Cast Bullet Handbook loads favor Bullseye results and that 2.9 gr is the minimum. I figure at midrange of 3.2 any normal, moderate roll crimp shouldn't be a problem, forcing me to mess with my standard 38 Special crimp settings or to get a separate crimp die. I loaded 12 test rounds and will see how it goes from there. I just used up some plated wadcutters, so these are my first in lead, with roll crimp, and not seated flush.
I used 2.7 with DEWCs crimped in the groove (about 1/8 sticking out) and a roll crimp. I used 3.5 with LRN crimped in the groove. no issues, and I used probably a medium crimp.
We were shooting offhand so accuracy was not paramount on this trip, I pretty much just wanted to see how the reloads shot. they were able to be covered with my hand, but I didnt check for much more than that.
