Ok now that I got your attention. I came across a 38 super in an AMT backup. I'm not interested in buying one but I am curious about it. I've owned one of the backups but in 380. It was no real pleasure to shoot. I know they made these in 9mm as well but I believe with a slightly larger frame. This one in 38 super looks to be the same size as the 9mm. I'm sure that helps some but still? I can imagine the recoil is unpleasant to say the least.
Anyone own one? Shot one? Anyone care to satisfy my curiosity? How was it?

I had the double action variant of the 380 AMT and it was for me ok to fire and even with the rudimentary sight I was able to hit well enough at combat ranges. On the pepper poppers that were set up for 9x19mm I had to shoot them in the head area and hit it several times in succession to push the poppers over enough so they would fall. Many AMTs do not work, that one did and i never had a jam with it. IIRC it required a pin to be driven out to disassemble the slide. But overall it was a good gun. I shot a couple of snakes with it also.

There was a guy on another forum years ago that converted an AMT Back Up to 10mm. I wonder how many rounds he put through that.

I have a Backup in .45 ACP. I shoot target loads in it and it's not bad at all.
The DA only trigger was almost impossible to pull back so I had a gunsmith I know lighten the pull. It still is no 'smooth as butter' trigger but it is a big improvement.

Being the VERY happy owner and past carrier of a .45 Back Up I would LOVE to get a .38 Super if only just to have.

Can't possibly be worse than my 340SC with hot .357s in it.

Todd.

I'd happily shoot that thing one handed while pounding on my chest with the other, doing a Tarzan call at the same time. :D

What a fun cartridge. I got into 38 Super last year, and it is an overlooked jewel that should be put in small 45 framed guns IMO. I'd certainly rather shoot that than an airweight 357.

I've wanted a SA XDs in 38 Super for a long time. this Backup is cool! But that price...……….. nope.

I've head of, but never actually seen a 38 Super AMT Backup "in the flesh". As to the recoil of the 38 Super cartridge though, over the past half century or so I have shot up a bunch of factory and handloaded 9MM and 38 Super ammo, in a variety of pistols. I doubt most would notice any difference at all in recoil between 9MM and 38S, if using standard US commercial ammo in both calibers......ymmv

I wonder if there are any warnings that come with the pistol. Not all .38 super are created equally. They’ve ranged from a little hotter than a 9 to a fistful of .357 mag in an auto.

The 1911 platform is perfect for the .38 sup, IMHO, and that's what I have. It's a series 70 customized Colt.

The load I used last year revel up a 124 gr FMJ to 1450 FPS from a 5” barrel. That’s just one load and it’s a top performer, but yes, you can juice em up good with the right combo of components.

The Backup was chambered in 40 and 400 Corbon too. I think either of those would be less comfortable than a 38 Super with most factory ammo.
