I have read a hand full of threads on this subject and cannot find a definite answer. What manufacture claims a bullet made specifically for short barrel defense? Since i'm new to the wheel gun scene I do not know much about it. I have carried a 38spl+P gun for a while and I practice with 148gr HBWC's and a mild Bullseye load. My carry/defense load for now is just a basic rem JHP +P factory load you can buy at wall mart. I did not want to invest in a high priced ammo until I find the proper load for a short 1 7/8" barrel and this has turned out to be a real search.

As The Lone Haranguer said, it is the Speer Gold Dot 38+P 135-gr round, AKA GDSB loads.

In addition, Buffalo Bore makes a number of their special loads that are optimized for 2" barrels.

fdb, If you have not already been to the 642 Club here on the forum, you need to. There you will find a lot of good info about ammo for your snub nose revolver. orchidhunter

With any .38 load, the key is multiple shots on target, not just one.

Speer 135 gr. +p short barrel are great. I did a test with that and a speer 125gr +p LE load the short barrel load had a lot more energy.I would never go back to a regular load in a snub gun
I will post the test bullets soon maybe tomorrow.
The difference is like a 380 verses a 9 mm just using the short barrel loads

the Speer 135gr golddot was optimised for velocity out of the the sub-2" barrel to provide maximised expandsion for a LE agency

The Speer 135gr GD sure is hard to find in these parts. I guess I'll have to break down and order some for the Det. Special.
