40 S&W Reloading question

I am new to reloading and want to reload some 40 S&W with the following ingredients:

Remington 5-1/2 small pistol magnum primers
Alliant Power Pistol
BSL Bullet Works 180 grain rounded flat nose plain base http://www.bslbullet.com/180-grain-rounded-flatnose-plain-base-p-16.html

Is the data I need going to be in the Hornady manual?

Also, that is a cast bullet, correct?

I understand I may need to back off some on the powder since I am using magnum primers, but will that information be clearly laid out in the manual?

I dont have a hornady manual so I cant speak on that part, but my lee book doesnt have any data for power pistol and 180gr lead. Im sure people are going to direct you to buy a lyman cast bullet manual if you are going to be loading up cast.

Also, if you have a glock, be sure not to use the factory barrel with lead, you need an aftermarket barrel with standard rifling to safely shoot lead.

Yes, it is a Lead cast bullet.

No, the Hornady manual will not have data for a 180gr Cast bullet and Power Pistol.

If you are going to shoot lead, it's best to have a lead bullet manual. Lyman 4th Edition.

Recent Hornady manuals provide data for Hornady bullets only.
Yes, those are cast with a BHN of around 14.
Contact the caster and ask what he suggests.

I don't recall using mag primers with Power Pistol.
That being said, my carry load and favorite target load is comprised of a Power Pistol concoction and Montana Gold Bullet.

What is BHN?

bhn is a unit of hardness. 14 is kinda soft, 23 kinda hard .. For lead.

standard primers are all gone. A number of us are reformulating for mag primers.

You are using the correct Remington primer. The 5 1/2 is for high pressure rounds like the 40, the 1 1/2 is used for low pressure rounds and not recommended in he 40.
