I ordered a few hundred 215 gr. cast bullets for my .41 mag last week. I'm having trouble finding recipes that use this exact bullet. I can find data for jacketed bullets of 210 and 220 grains...but not much for 215 grains...even less for lead...and even less using alliant 2400 in this combination.
Lyman lists a 220 grain jacketed bullet with a starting load of 2400 at 14.5 grains, with the max load at 16.2.
They list a 210 grain jacketed bullet with a starting load of 2400 at 16 grains, with the max load at 17.8 grains.
I figure I'm safe using a 215 gr. bullet if I use the starting level of 14.5 listed for the heavier bullet ( I shot those today with no problems...and they were noticabley less powerful than the factory loaded 210 grain bullets I shot).
But...where is the high end? Putting aside the fact that I'm comparing lead to jacketed I figure the ceiling has to be lower than the 17.8 grains listed as the max for the lighter bullet. But how much lower?
I also figure the max load for the 215 grain is somewhere north of the 16.2 grain max for the 220 grain bullet, but again I have no idea how much higher.
So I'm somewhere above 16.2 and somewhere below 17.8. That's a pretty big range.
Does anyone have a book that lists a load using 2400 and a cast 215 gr bullet? I'm using wincheter large primers.
I'm thinking that 16.5 grains should be good to go but wanted to run this past some other folks to get some ideas. I've never loaded for the .41 mag. I'm running these through a Ruger Blackhawk if that matters.
Any thoughts are appreciated.
