I am not a handloader-let me state that up front.

Does anyone know of a company that produces a defensive load for this caliber-say a 200+ grain bullet at 900fps or so?

If I were to go to a custom ammo shop to have them build a load for me, what components would you all recommend?

What was the "old" police load for this caliber?

Thanks!

The police load for the 41 mag was a 210 gr at 1000 fps. A good defense load would be a lead SWCHP at 900-1000 fps.

I reload for the .41 and am currently making loads with 230 grain lead semiwadcutter bullets. They work great on steel plates and I think they'd do OK as defense loads too.

However, if I was going to use my .41s as a defense, rather than a hunting or competition gun, I'd load them with factory 175 grain Winchester Silvertips.

I will second the 175 gr. WW Silvertip for defensive use. My 4" Model 57 with Mepro night sights is my bedroom gun with the silvertips. Accurate, and very controlable. Plus it ranked high in One shot Stops by Marshall. Good choice.

Georgia Arms has the closest thing I know to the classic police load currently being commercially made--210 LSWC @ a claimed 1100 fps. Dunno what it'd do in a real defensive length revo, but I'm sure it'd be adequate to the task. Pretty reasonable, too--at Georgia-arms.com.

If I was gonna carry a .41 for SD, I'd load either something just like that, or maybe the Speer 200 grain half-jacketed SWCHP at 1100 fps or so:

PS--you've got a .41 and you haven't started reloading yet? Are you crazy, man? ;)

+1 on the silvertips for a DEDICATED sd load. As for custom ammo contact gray area ammo. He posts under the handle WESHOOT2 on our sister forum www.thefiringline.com . Custom handgun ammo is what he does for a living.

SD load for .41Magnum

When I carry a .41Magnum for defense I generally carry Winchester Silvertips. However, Corbon and Buffalo Bore's 170gr.JHC load is a good anti-personnel round also. I've been shooting Speer's new 210gr.Gold Dot lately and it seems like it would be good for the job, too. :scrutiny:

According to my collection of notes, the police load is 8.0gr Unique under a 210gr plated bullet. I also list an equivilent of 6.3gr TiteGroup under he same bullet. I've shot both loads with plain cast bullets and both are very pleasant and accurate out to 100yds.

+1 to anything out of the 41 being a good stopper :D

Thank you all.

I just picked up a Model 58 to see how I liked it vs a 3" Model 65 in 357 or 38+P.

Next I want to try a 4" S&W in 45 Colt.
