Anyone like Unique for a 405 gr cast bullet in a new Sharps Quigley 45-70 with a 34in. barrel? I wanted to try it but can't find a recipe. I wanted something in the 13-1500fps range and hopefully accurate. I also have a bunch of 700-X, 800-X and Clays. Ever try them?
Thanks,

I have used 18 grains of Unique with a 300 grain hp in a Ruger #1S for about 1,450 fps and it shoots very well. I have never used Unqiue with anything heavier. I use 2400 for the heavier bullets.

You could use this to find starting loads, work up, stop when you get to the velocity you want, or limit out due to pressure signs.

I would be very cautious with light loads of pistol powder in a 34" barrel.

It would be very easy to stick a bullet in the bore with a barrel that long and only a hard kick in the pants to keep it moving all the way.

Try AA5744.

There is one experienced shooter who says there is a risk of "ringed" chambers with fast burning powders, even at what appears to be normal chamber pressures and no wad or filler. The lack of a recent pressure tested "recipe" ought to tell you something.

Good looking Martini, Slam. I'd call it a Peabody Martini in its present configuration, even though the action was made in England.

Lyman cast book shows 11-13.5 gr Unique with small dacron wad behind a 422 gr lead bullet. This is shown for 1895 Marlin. It shows 16800 c.u.p to 27500 c.u.p. I can't say if it's safe in your Sharps or not. The low end probably is, but who knows. I shoot 27 gr AA 5744 in mine and it's great.
