45 Colt ammo & gun question

There may or may not be a problem with Doubletap and Buffalobore ammunition, but the greater concern is with those that "roll their own," and may or may not have the expertise of the above mentioned companies.

The larger ammunition manufacturers use special barrels that are mounted in fixtures and equiped to measue pressure from chamber to muzzle. They are also wise enough to know that the data obtained is relative to that barrel, and not necessarily all barrels. This beats by far the practice of some folks who determine such things by looking at a primer to see if it's flattened or not.

If all ammunition (handloads in particular) was loaded at safe levels the gunmakers repair departments wouldn't be discovering expanded chambers now and then.

Few may be aware of it, but Elmer Keith, actually downloaded the .44 Magnum for general everyday use in his S&W revolvers. Bill Ruger, who designed the Blackhawk, Redhawk and Super Redhawk revolvers strongly objected to the use of some “Ruger only” loads in them. If there use could be determined in guns returned to the factory they would consider that the warrantee was voided.
Elmer Keith's working load in the .44Mag was his 250gr cast bullet over 22.0gr 2400, hardly what anyone would consider "downloaded".

Bill Ruger and his company have NEVER condoned the use of ANY handloaded ammunition in their guns. Period.

And Ruger has no warranty.

None of which has any bearing on the loads that are safe in their guns. Data is readily available from reputable sources and I have NEVER heard of a sixgun grenading when loaded with proper data.
