I need to get some powder for 45 colt. I have 250 grain rnfp lead bullets. Looking for something from 950fps-1050fps. I know that 10 grains of unique would fit the bill perfect, but it can't be found. Is there a powder that is available in stores that would work. I didn't realize powder was so hard to come by.

I agree about unique. It's a great powder for 45 colt.green dot is a pretty good substitute.

Shouldnt be that difficult to find a powder that would work. Even Bullseye works, though isnt optimal at the velocity range you are looking at. Herco is similar to Unique, Green Dot, Red Dot, Win 231, whats the Dupont powder for med loads, 700x? 2400 would work if you dont want to go lower in velocity. Elmer Keith used it in Colts safely for 1100 fps loads for ages.

Take your manual with you and see what powders give medium range charge weights for the vel you want. Read about it in the info section. Buy it. Speer manauls have quite a bit of powder info in them, not sure about others. Probably Lyman does also.

The .45 Colt was made for black powder. Black powder and the BP substitutes are readily available. A case full of BP or sub is a handful; surprisingly powerful if you have not tried it before. The case is the measure... Load it so there is no air space inside the cartridge and the powder is slightly compressed. Use a compatible lube on the bullets (organic/wax, not petroleum based). Do some research on black powder cartridges. Have fun lighting up the range!

There are so many powders that will work in the 45 Colt and work fairly well. The problem is, you asked about one you can actually get. IMO you have a good chance of getting Red Dot or Promo which is a good choice. Trail Boss is also a good choice of powders that can be found. I also agree with the suggestion of using a BP substitute.

I used to use mostly W231 but that's hard to find. My current favorite 45 Colt powder is HS-6. I have also used a lot of AA#5 in the 45 colt with good success. I hope that is a little help...

That's impossible to answer without knowing what's available in your stores. Like others have said, many will work.

If the situation in the US is anything like our handgun powder up here in Canada, which is now as bad as it is in the US, then you need to make a list up of all the powders that are usable in a .45Colt load. Not just the optimum ones either. List them all. Maybe put a "*" by the ones that are considered optimum.

Carry that list faithfully and begin haunting the stores on a regular basis. Be willing to buy anything on the list at any opportunity at the moment it appears. Because if you're not ready with this information and have to go and check then by the time you get back to the place it'll be gone.

In my experience all the powders are dribbling into the shops on a regular basis. But thanks to the hoarders and opportunists it disappears as fast as it arrives. The only way to combat this is get on a phone list, if any of the shops are running such a phone list, or check in with the shops on more or less a weekly basis.

I've used 231,HS6,Universal Clays and 296/H 110 in my Ruger 45 Colt pistols with bullet weights from 200 -320 grs.

In my parts, powders that work well are getting easier to find. I've bought 700-X and HP38 in the last month or two. I have seen Unique. Accurate pistol powders are becoming more available. I forget if I have seen some #5 but others are available so i suspect #5 is around or will be showing up soon.

I have just loaded some Accurate No. 5; also 700-X and HP-38. I have long favored Winchester 231/HP-38 for the .45 Colt. Both meter a little better in my measure than Unique.
