By .45 Long, do you mean the revolver cartridge?

If so, it will be a poor choice. High power competition starts out at 200 yards. It gets worse from there.

Even if you managed to actually put some rounds on paper, you would have to lob rounds in like a mortar. Your accuracy would be slightly above zero.

100 yards range

Dear Powderman

I know about the limitation of the caliber, even though the range is 100 yard I 'd like to enjoy shooting the winchester 94. I have to asume my range report will be very poor.

Thanks

I am far from an expert on this subject, (very far) but, I think it may prove difficult to obtain great accuracy with the 45 colt. There are several reasons for this. First, the design of the round (a pistol caliber originally) isn’t the best choice for long range accuracy. Second, the majority of bullet choices are lead flat nosed rounds (designed to be shot in lever guns) and again aren’t the best choice for long range applications. Third, the overwhelming majority of rifles chambered for this round are lever actions. As much as I love these guns, they are not the ideal choice for long range shooting. Lever guns can be accurized, but they won’t hold a candle to bolt guns. Check out www.leverguns.com for improvements that can be made to a lever gun to increase its accuracy. You might be able to produce decent results out to about 200 yards with a lever gun, but beyond that it is hard to comment on accuracy using a pistol calibre. I did read a post on www.leverguns.com from a guy that shot a 30-30 in a 1000 yard match with decent results, but that is a rifle cartridge.

You have made no indication what type of rifle you will be shooting. If I were to make a suggestion what type of rifle (that’s available) that is best suited for this type of application, I’d have to go with some type of single shot design. Check out www.ballardrifles.com there are several models offered in 45 colt. However, be warned they are quite spendy.

Hope this helps.

Well it seems while I was typing my long winded response you made a second post. If you are interested in obtaining the best accuracy possible out of your 94 I highly suggest heading over to www.leverguns.com . The accurizing a lever action rifle is a must read in the articles section as well as www.leverguns.com/articles/paco/45coltlevergun.htm

Good luck and please post results. I’ve been meaning to as a 45 colt lever gun to my collection for over a year now just haven’t found what I want yet.

CZhen, if you are shooting the reduced course at 100 yards, all you have to do is have a good zero and shoot as well as a magazine writer to make your .45 competitive.

Can you get off ten shots in a minute for the rapid fire stage?

I will post my result

Dear forum
I will post my results, on few days (Sat 22 match), thanks to all replys done.

I've fired a Marlin 1894 in .45LC at 100yds and the trajectory is not pretty. We used about all of the elevation available on the sight; but once there it shot decently enough. I doubt it will give you the kind of accuracy you need to be competitive though.

I 've tried a few shoots @ 25 yards and my group were 1.5" with iron sights. That encourage to shoot in a match.
