If 'caliber' is defined as the land to land measurement (which, by the way, it is) then what difference does it make what the chamber diameter is????
 
The Chamber diameter should not be smaller than the Land-to-Land measure...nor too much larger than the Groove-to-Groove, of course...

The .44/.45 became the traditional army caliber and the .36/.38 the traditional Navy caliber because the Navy did not have to shoot horses.

I can't imagine trying to down a horse with a .44 cal BP revolver. My experience is that even with a 35 gr. charge of FFFg, my 1861 has worse penetration than a .45 ACP.
