OK, I am not reloading but I thought you guys would know best. What is the correct rate of twist for the 450 Bushmaster? I see Savage is using 1 in 24" and Ruger is using 1 in 16".

From what I could find, Bushmaster makes them with a 1:24" twist. But, like the .223, it may depend on the bullet weight that you're pushing. Just some thoughts.

1:24 is right for the AR based .450 Bushmaster as they are limited to the 250 grain bullets due to mag length. The Ruger bolt guns have a more aggressive twist rate because you can load heavier bullets in them.

Why is that? I run 500 grain bullets in my 458 socom with the same mag length (old Colt AR 15 mags).

With supersonic loads, the 1-24" twist should work with anything up to 400gr bullets. The Ruger's 1-16" twist would probably work better for subsonic loads using 400gr bullets. In reality, there's really no reason to go that heavy.

I have loaded bullets as heavy as 405gr in my 450 Bushmaster and they fed fine from a standard magazine. 1:24 did fine job at stabilizing them also, still punching nice round holes at 100 yards. I think some manufactures are using 1:16 simply because they are using the same tooling they use to rifle 45 ACP barrels. 1:16 is a very common twist rate for 45 ACP and both cartridges use the same bore and groove diameters.

When I bought mine I was thinking "Swamp gun". I hadn't even realized they made an FTX just for it. For the fifty or hundred yards I have to shoot in this particular stand I wanted a big fat meplat. And not one of my treasured oldies. Though once I have the magazines figured out, I bet I find this just as treasured.
