My current HD pistol is an FNX Tactical 45 w/threaded barrel and I'm considering suppressing it. It has 15+1 capacity. I am curious if a suppressed 300 blackout pistol would offer any advantages over the FNX besides mag capacity? I am leaving supersonic loads out of the thought process.

The 300 will have a better bullet coefficiency if range matters to you. However, for defense use I think they are rather similar if you're talking 2 bullets of 230gr both going 900fps (to keep it simple). I have not looked at the performance of them both in gel, that may be worth doing, not sure if the more streamline 300 will over penetrate or not.

Also, the 300 pistol, while getting you more capacity, also gets you more bulk.

In the end, I think they are rather close for home defense. It is all a trade off.

The ergos of a.45 inside a house will be better. The accuracy of the 300 will be bettwer outside. The suppressor will add length. Most 300B pistols will be near std carbine length with a suppressor. Further the 45 can be operated one handed easier. To me the ballistics between these two don't matter as much as the firearm configuration for a HD gun.

Has there been a clear cut case of self defense with a suppressed weapon?

M. Ayoob once wrote of a guy who fought off a pursuer with a legally held full auto and there was considerable extra hassle over it.

I went through a lot of different loads with the 300 before finding one that worked for me (killing pigs). If supersonic is out for the 300, I’d just use the 45.

I have a suppressed.300 BO SBR and it’s a tack driver out to 100 yrs with a subsonic 190 gr Sub-X load with 1680. Wouldn’t hesitate to use it for home defense either.

I also have the FNX 45 tactical and adding a suppressor for it is on my short list. I also have a Walther PPQ M2 Navy 9MM with a threaded barrel so when I do buy a suppressor, it will be useable on either or pistol.

If your primary home defense is the pistol, recommend suppressing that first.

I have a couple of 7.5" suppressed subsonic 300BLK AR pistols for primary home defense weapons, along with numerous backup firearms spread throughout the house. I like that I can use my hands if need be without having to put the gun down, with the one point sling. Plus is makes it harder to take away from me. Higher capacity, which can be very important if you have multiple intruders which is happening a lot with home invasions in Houston. Foremost, the suppressor protects my and my pets' hearing. I also have 3 or 4 .45 ACP handguns hidden around the house. I think both are great options. I also have a couple short barreled 12 gauge shotguns in the mix.
My one story house is pretty expansive with a number of doors leading outside including an open air atrium intruders theoretically could rappel into, so I have a series of loud sleigh bells with different pitches attacked to each door so that I will know if someone is trying to get in and where. Better to be overpowered and not need it, plus I don't have any kids at the house.

I'm a little bias because I have loaded 45acp for like 20+ years buts that's what I would do.
Only advantage for 30cal is its a little easier to get 30cal real nice and quiet.
That's what I think too.

How does the 300 BO compare to a 45 regarding penetration of missed shots indoors? Which will be better contained generally within the home, i.e., less likely to penetrate walls etc? Speaking of 300 BO subsonic vs 45 hollow point defensive rounds.

Given the choice between a pistol and an AR "pistol" for a social encounter. . . I'm taking the faux rifle every time unless the encounter is located in a crawlspace. Ease of accurate fire is so much better and faster that it's darn near cheating.

Similar sized bullets at similar speeds should yield similar results.

I favor my .300 blk suppressed AR pistol over my 45 acp handgun for accuracy rather than bullet speed. Plus I have it strapped to me with a sling giving me more versatility. Though I could do something similar with the lanyard loop of my 1911, but its still not as effective.

You walk around the house with your BO strapped on? I giggled briefly because the OP mentioned HD which I assume is home defense….

All good either way.
