i am new to reloading for pistol and wanted a good load using unique powder and 230 grain FMJRN. your sugestions would be greatly appreciated

6.0 to 6.5 grains.

6.5 was long considered to be a GI mil-spec duplicate load, but might be just a tad hotter now with todays powder.

AA #5 is another popular powder for 230 Gr FMJ 45 ACP loads in the 800 to 850 FPS range.

Welcome to THR.

The OP needs to secure and read some good reloading manuals.

The Lyman 49th, Hornady or Speer for handgun reference.

I would consult the Alliant Powder web site.

I get dope from the horse's mouth not some internet facade!

Always work up loads for safety, function, and accuracy! What is accurate in one gun may not be in yours! You will never know what you are missing?

6.1grs of Unique behind a Remington bulk 230gr FMJ lit off with a Winchester LPP sends it out the end of the barrel of a Government model Colt at 851 fps average. This duplicates military ball ammo.

I load 185gr JHP's with 7.7grs of Unique for 1,090 fps.

I use Remington 2 1/2"s and CCI 300 in various cases and I agree with 6.0-6.5 grains of Unique with 230fmj's.

Welcome to the forum...
As you can see there are several time tested and reliable loads out there for the .45 Auto. Unique has been used for a long time mostly because it works and it's been around for a lot of those 100 years the .45 auto has been around.

Like mentioned above, AA#5 is also a good powder for the .45 Auto. That powder was developed for use in the .45 Auto. 8.5gr AA#5 will give you right around 900 fps from a 5" 1911 when loading a 230gr FNJ bullet.

My favorite recipe is 5.5gr W231 under a 230gr bullet, both lead and ball. It's my go-to load when it comes to the .45 Auto.

Couldn't agree more as that is exactly the same load I use in my guns. I've used Unique and I found I like the 231 loads more.

I stick with 6 grains of Unique, 1.26 OAL with CCI 300 primers. The Alliant recommended maximum of Unique for 230 gr. FMJRN is 6.5 grains. AT 6 grains it's a soft shooting load that chronos for me right at 800 from 2 different 1911's.

I like it because it shoots to POA on a fixed site GI.
