As some know I'm planning my Designated Marksman Rifle clone (a .223 Remington VTR) and am planning to mount both BUIS and a quality optical sight on their. Maximum range of engagement is around 600-700 meters on a standard US Army range man sized target. I also plan to engage closer targets in the same manner as a 3-gun competition. Does anyone know much about the 4x or 6x ACOGs on Trijicon's website for those purposes?

I was recently at the range with my 4x32 ACOG (chevron reticule with the vertical only bullet drop lines at 400, 600 etc) and it did well with the 100 yard target, but was getting rather difficult with the 200. I'm still relatively new to the game, ~1000 rounds shot total, but when I switched it out with my friend's 6x-24x scope, I was able to shoot out the score numbers on the target. That said, I'm always getting good comments when people look through the ACOG. The field of view and quality of the optics is excellent for the shorter range targets.

if you are dead set on an acog it will work fine for 3 gun stuff. but take the advise of others, and buy you a nice variable scope like a 1.8-10 u.s. optics sn3. just make sure the reticle matches the adjustment knobs.
get both the acog and the quality variable scope in larue mounts and switch them back and forth. you are asking too much from an acog.

i've had no problems hitting 10" steel plates with a ta31f-rco out to 500-600 yrds
Past 600, my hit % plummets, but that is more likely due to the ammo i'm using

i'd think you'd be ok shooting at a man-sized target

A great thought I had was a Night Force NWS 2.5x10x24 scope with LaRue QD mounts as well.

nightforce would be a fine choice. make sure you get the mil dot reticle and mil adjustments with zero stop. talk to alex at eurooptic.com he usually has what you need in stock, and a great guy to do business with.

i bought a Nightforce 1-4x that was mil/mil w/zero stop from eurooptic and it sits in a larue mount. nice optic. and yes, i'd recommend eurooptic too. (my 2nd purchase from them)

Checking on Google for Night Force optics I saw about $1200 or more. Is this average?

Just want a good and solid optic that allows me to hit smallish targets at 600+ meters.

nightforce is very strict on there pricing. they will be just about the same price everywhere. looking at about 1500 for the mil/mil 2-10. I promise it won't be a wasted investment.

I've hit IPSC-target-sized steel gongs at 500 yards with an ACOG TA-11. It isn't easy, however.

Once you start pushing those sorts of distances, you're really going to find it will test the limits of the cartridge, rifle, scope, and most importantly, you.

400 yards seems to be a more practical limit for my particular setup, and even then, I need to be on to make hits consistently.

Thanks. So for most three gun competitions (I assume simulating most combat situations) I've heard Night Force and ACOG scopes are good investments?

I can't really say anything that Zak hasn't more thoroughly researched, field-tested, and written about.

Suffice it to say, his articles are well worth reading and taking into consideration when looking into what sort of optic to put on your rifle.

I've already done so and am still debating what sort of optic to
mount on my DMR for the project.

Another good (and cheaper) alternative is a Leupold Mark 4 1.5-5x with an illuminated Special Purpose Reticle (SPR). You can buy it as a package deal from LaRue for $1080 which includes a QD LT-104 mount which sells for $195. They'll throw in a hat, a beverage entry tool and some armadillo meat rub! :D If you're really lucky, they'll include a zoom ring adjustment lever which works VERY well (shown attached in the bottom two photos).

The Mark 4 isn't a FFP scope but it does have very good glass, excellent adjustments and a lifetime warranty and you'll have no problem hitting 2 MOA (or smaller) targets out to 600 yards. Here's a photo showing the Mark 4 mentioned on one of my ARs. My wife was using this rifle to knock down reactive targets from 75 yards out to 375 yards a couple of weeks ago. Admittedly they're not MOA targets but you get the idea. The last reactive target at 375 is shown through my spotting scope as it was hit and as it went down. My wife hit it many, many times using XM193 ball ammuntion.

1858, thanks for the input. I like the fold up BUIS configuration on your AR, I've got a Talon Arms setup for my own AR in mind before mounting the optics.
