5.7 pistol?

I have shot a Ruger 5.7. put around three rounds through it when a range lane neighbor offered to let me shoot it.

I was impressed, certainly not a small pistol, but a delight to shoot with light recoil and felt good in hand.

I'm far from a trigger snob, but I can tell the difference between a horrible trigger and a decent trigger at the minimum. In my opinion the 5.7 Ruger trigger was more than just acceptable it was good.

In The fantasy world where I have lots more hobby disposable income, it is one that would be on the list.

Shot FN 5.7. I liked it, but I would never pay the price for it. This was years ago before the Ruger.

Very light recoil. Very accurate. It would have been a gem if it actually has a good trigger.

Honestly, I'd prefer a 22tcm 1911.
The FN is pretty pricey still, I wondered how it was to fire.

I have shot the FN. A real joy to shoot, but energetic blast for a handgun and expensive to feed. I have a PS90 carbine that I can't afford to feed too. I would buy the Ruger, but again- expensive to feed.

I had one for a minute. Best way I can describe shooting it was expensive. Ammo was scarce and costly. I have run everything from 22lr to 500 mag. recoil was not that special but one of my favorite revolvers is a 3 inch 44 mag. Im a big dude. Not huge but not average. Id rather have another 40. Or I would get a 10mm before i would own another 5.7

Just not worth the trouble IMHO

I have two FN. Never shot the Ruger. They are an excellent varmint handgun. 100 yards is very do-able and repeatable. Very accurate and flat. Zero recoil. I also have 22 mag revolvers and two semi autos. They are not the same. Ballistically they are close but 22 magnum ammo sucks. The FN 5.7 ammo is as good as most match grade ammo. Extreme spreads are single digits. I do not know about any of the other brands of ammo

But I agree not worth the trouble. Expensive ammo. Can be hard to find (although I bought a few cases 15 years ago from sportsmans guide and haven't needed anymore). Reloading is frustrating at best.

I've had the FN for quite a while, about ten years. Paid $700 for a used one. I've always enjoyed shooting it because of it's somewhat unique nature. Soft recoil accompanied by roar and flame. Cool :D . Ammo has always been available, (until now), but I bought a large amount at $15 to $18 a box when I found the gun. I have about 800 rounds left from that and yes, I am hoarding it for the time being.

It's very accurate, very high quality and very reliable making it a very good gun IMHO. The FN is a bit different than conventional modern handguns and may not appeal to everyone. Wish I had the carbine or perhaps a AR57 upper to make the duo. If you can afford the gun, it's worth having.

I also recently fondled a Ruger 57 and would be tempted by it. Too bad ammo has disappeared from polite society.

I have a FN 57, mainly just for something different to shoot at the range. Its pretty bulky but never fails to draw attention with the fireball, noise and throwing brass at the guys several lanes over :)

If just for fun shooting, a Kel-Tec PMR-30 could be a really cheap alternative, both gun and ammo. 22 mag shot out of a light-weight short-barrelled pistol can produce an impressive amount of noise, flame and smoke.
I got a PMR 30 2 years ago ,7 mags and 4k rds. of gold dot short barrel for the price of the FN. I really wanted the 5.7 but just couldnt justify the cost.

I shot an FN 5.7 quite a few years ago and loved it. I wanted one for quite a while and almost bought one, I showed restraint and decided that I would likely never carry it, would shoot infrequently and was more of a want than a need....

Off topic but your avatar avatar brings me back to a time when I played an app game and someone used the exact same one. Funny because I hadn't seen it in forever

I have an FN 5.7 purchased about a year ago, roughly around $900 new during a promotion being run. I have been collecting 5.7 ammo for a few years so have quite a bit stocked up - bought on the lows intending to get a 5.7 and PS90. Got the FN 5.7 but chose the CMMG57 instead of PS90. Personally, love the combo with the right ammo but different ammo - AE vs. SS198LF for example - shoots to considerably different POI. I hold on to the hope the ammo prices will come down one day. I also have a PMR30 with MCARBO upgrades and that is a hoot to shoot and a darn sight cheaper too...but ballistics do not compare to the FN 5.7. Nice weapon.

I did the Mcarbo upgrades in a pair of PMR-30s for my uncle and he still had feeding issues with the 30gr ammo. 40gr and up runs fine.
As to the ballistics between 5.7 vs .22WMR, is the 5.7 hands down superior to the .22mag? I cant exactly recall but I remember being left with the impression that they were about the same? No?

Dust, no not the same. Lucky to see 1600 FPS out of the .22 WMR in the pistol. With either SS198LF or some of the other defensive loads, you get 2100 to 2300. Depends on what school of ballistics you subscribe, but anything in excess of 2200 or around there leaves a permanent wound channel/more shock. Regardless - both are good rounds but the 5.7 has better range of ammo, can be loaded hotter even in Standard ammo (SS198LF) and is center fire. I don’t really subscribe to Kevlar/armor penetration but yes the 5.7 tends to be better. I wouldn’t want to be hit by either of them. My PMR30 is a great fun range toy, so is my 5.7. BUT the 5.7 is in my opinion a great defensive load with the right ammo. I use my CMMG57 pistol carbine for home defense with SS198LF exactly because of wall penetration, and do not believe I am undergunned, my FN is backup.

I love my FN Five-Seven.........Soft shooting and a very light pistol, a lot lighter than you'd think based on its size.

It shoots flames like you wouldn't believe.

Haven't shot or handled the Ruger yet but for the price I don't see why anyone would pass it up. Its on my list at some point.
