I was at my cabin firing off ~2lb soda cans filled with grout (does that make it a mortar mortar?) using 250 grains of Goex FFg and they were landing around 350+ yards and I was getting out to about 400+ yards once I put a couple wraps of duct tape around the can (still slid easily in the bore)

My experience at sea level was less than 150yd. Toward afternoon I fired along with a strong wind with the elevation significantly beyond 45 deg and was catching the wind in my favor and going just as far.

It was a heck of a lot of fun.

I guess bowling ball is the next step in escalation :D

500 feet really shouldn't make a difference. I bet it was the high winds.

BTW Arizona Mike, how many layers of duct tape do you wrap around a beer can?

Thanks to excessive windage, I could not hit a pallet at 60 yards distance. Had some go over, some under, some left and some right.

Have you tried to wrap it tight enough that you need to force them? I normally would not suggest this but... Most of us have much more mortar than needed for the amount powder and shot. If this is your case, a bit more pressure might "heighten" your results.
