I received a 586 with a four position target sight on a 6" barrel as a present. I would like to know if these models are collectible or worth a premium over the other 586 models? I don't like the looks of a lugged barrel and the large sight. If you think it is special I might keep it; otherwise I might sell or trade it. I do like the way it shoots. I am thinking of a K or N frame with a 6" barrel and a Patridge or ramp sight. Which model will handle and shoot similar to the 586?

That gun was originally offered for PPC Distinguished matches to allow having a setting zeroed for each distance being shot...including using a head-hold zero at 50 yards. It was a regular catalog item, but had limited appeal...and has been largely replaced in PPC competition by the 952.

It might take some time to find someone who might pay you are premium for this modification.

The K-frame will use the same grips but be lighter in the hand, the N-frame will feel larger and be a bit more massive

The adjustable sight models were also used for Metallic Silhouette matches, allowing the sight to be set for the four distances. The stainless steel 686 variant is not uncommon, I've never seen a 586 AFS.
That being said, it is not a collectable in the sense of age, rarity, workmanship or value; its just a fine firearm that can be shot with heavy .357 Magnum loads without developing premature wear.

A second hand K frame Model 19 or 66 can be had in a six inch barrel without the full under-lug and use the same grips as the 586. It will not handle constant .357 magnums, the 586 was developed as a slightly heavier, larger gun because the Model 19 could crack its forcing cone with high speed light weight magnums. You will not find a factory patridge front sight on a regular production 19 or 66.
The K frame Model 14 K38 Target Masterpiece in .38 special did come with a patridge front sight.
The .357 Magnum Model 27 N frame is larger, does not have a full under-lug, will balance closer to the hand, can handle constant .357 magnums and can sometimes be found with a patridge front sight.

Somebody gives you one of the finest .357 revolvers available, with the best sighting system ever offered on the model and you want to sell or trade it??? Most came with the detestable orange insert, white outline foolishness.

I think they're quite striking, infinitely better than the standard orange insert, do not look out of place at all and that IS a patridge front sight. You'd be hard-pressed to find a better .357Mag for the outdoorsman.

Thanks for the good info. I do like the way it handles magnum loads. It is very accurate and easy to aim. I guess the best thing to do is keep it and and buy a 19 for light loads. I did see a 19 last week end with a Patridge sight on a 6" barrel. I like the picture of the 586 with the factory stocks. Mine has Pachmayr, it does not look as good as the wood.
