I am planning on a budget ar build to have some fun with and maybe hunt some pigs and deer. I am looking at the wolf performance upper. The reviews that I could find are good and it is made in the USA at by Anderson. Does anyone have any experience with these? Also I will probably buy a stripped lower from my lgs but would like some suggestions as to which parts kit to buy. Mil spec would be fine, but I want quality and durability.

Whats your budget.

Personally i have some very specific things i want in an AR (specifically right side reciprocating charging handles), so use very few of the more traditional upper anymore. My standard option is a complete BCA upper, and if i want something special I start with their side charging receiver.

Lowers are almost always anderson w the anderson lpks and triggers.

the rest of the parts are what ever interests me at the time.

The Grendel hunter seems like an affordable way to go, and from what ive read have been well liked.

I was looking at the Anderson lowers they are a very good price, but was told my the owner of my lgs that they were no good. It sounds like I may have been misinformed. As for the upper I will look at the bca, I do like the mil style and feel

They arnt anything special, and Ive read a few posts here and elsewhere of folks having problems with them.
Personally, and amongst my group of friend, there have been no issues in probably 50-75 builds.
Not saying it wont happen, just that i havent seen it yet.

BCA makes decent stuff, dunno if id call it mil spec, specially since i dont know or care what mil spec actually is lol. But again from personal experience im im will to recommend them. They do offer uppers in standard configurations, including mil ish. The grendels are more "modern" from what i remember tho.
I have been more impressed with the two uppers ive gotten recently than my first. Fit and finish has been much better, especially on the barrel rifling. The old ones had obvious button chatter.
Still shot well tho.
I actually just gave a friend of mine the 6.5 grendel upper i ordered from them a few months ago, otherwise id strip it down an take pictures.

I will definitely look into the bca before I place an order. Sorry you asked my budget. I'm trying to end up around the $600 range if possible. Thanks for the info so far

A friend and I have built 3 6.5 grendels with BCA uppers, a couple of 556s and a couple 7.62x39s, no problems so far, I've used Anderson, Aero and ATI lowers with Anderson and milspec LPKs, I built mine purchasing everything during a sale and wound up around $300ea minus optics and upgraded triggers. The hand guards are a little thicker than some thus weighing a little more. They say sub moa accuracy but I found that takes a little work, there is a difference between a 16" barrel and the 24" ammo preference.

I have had a Sanders Armory 6.5 Grendel upper and it was a shooting dude. Sanders Armory also does a good job with customer relations.

Just pulled a BCA barrel out of an upper I picked up cheap locally because I was not satisfied with the 1 1/2 MOA accuracy I was getting from it. It was perfectly serviceable and accurate enough for shooting pigs and deer, but I had other desires in mind.

I just wish Bear Creek would put their uppers on a diet. I know billet uppers are heavy, but whew.

Yeah, im looking at getting a milling vice for my big drill press just to try take some chunks out of the slab sides......tho it would probably be easier to just punch a slot in a https://www.joeboboutfitters.com/Sp...et-AR15-Upper-Receiver-p/jb-spartansmooth.htm
and run a bca side charging bolt....or for the ultimate in light weight side charging punch a hole and sink a steel insert in an aluminum bolt carrier...if theres space, i havent really looked.

There is nothing wrong with Andersons. They aren’t fancy, but they work well. I’ve put together 10+ ARs using Anderson lowers and haven’t had a problem. That said, there is a difference in fit and finish between my Anderson (Primary Arms used to have them on sale for $29.99) and my $90 Aero Precision. You’ll see some machining marks on the Anderson internals whereas other more expensive lowers will be smooth and flawless. However, a few machine marks inside and a plain Jane anodization does not impact function.

don't forget you'd have to figure out how to deal with the lack of charging handle on that spartan. But as long as you're doing that, why not go with a cheap upper like the anderson slick side. https://www.masdefense.com/product-p/mas00101104.htm

or if you can mill it down like this one https://venom-defense.com/ar-15-slick-side-billet-upper-receiver/ or this one https://ar15discounts.com/products/nbs-slick-side-billet-upper-receiver/ I might give you a call. I have 2 fat bca uppers that need some liposuction.

The spartan would be switched to side charging, you could also leave in standard rear charger and run it as a dual, or just plug the charger handle slot at the rear.

Let me get some tooling and see if i can make it work on my old beat up, and jurry rigged equipment lol. Id like to have a lighter aluminum upper for my UL rifle.

Sounds like you need to find a one heavy drill press and pin the morse taper in, there's some ok mill vises on eBay.

Shouldn't be hard drilling any bolt body for a handle and mill the slot. Or try a eBay mill.

I checked out the bca uppers on their sight, besides almost all of them being out of stock they do look pretty good and so do the reviews. That makes my first decision even harder. The prices are in the same ball park or some even a little cheaper. Now I have to decide if I want to stick with the wolf like I was going to or give the bca a shot.

I got my first BCA upper during COVID stay at home (zombieland lockdown). The fit and finish is actually better than I expected. I have not shot it yet. I have disassembled it and cleaned/reassembled. It seems to be worth the money. Assuming it will shoot fine.

I could not get Alexander Arms to respond so I found a Spikes on Gunbroker.

I pick up a lower on Tuesday. I could use the Grendel Hunter on another lower but I am not that excited about going to my indoor range because of covid. But I will soon and will report on how it works.

I've looked closer at the bca uppers. How is the quality? It's hard to believe a complete upper with a stainless barrel for just over $200!

Took my Grendel Hunter out for the first time last week, mostly have some Wolf to use, but I did buy a box of federal.

10 rounds in, my scope was sliding around on its rings, apparently I had adjusted the mount this winter and forgot to tighten the screws back up as they were all loose and didn't bring that size wrench in my bag.

Sigh.

So I'll try again tomorrow, storms permitting :)
