Camjr - just out of curiousity, what kind of attractive wear patterns are you getting?? Got a pic?

I just took my 442 out of the safe and as usual I gave it a once over. This revolver gives me an old fashioned comfort, like a warm blanket. I know that if I need it it will be there for me. I have other pistols but I always seem to grab this one first.
I....think....I ....am getting.....addicted.

Merry Christmas

S&W Customer Service - Excellent!

Back in post 3599, I mentioned some problems I've experienced with my 642 (my doing, BTW).

Before contacting S&W, I remeasured the cylinder gap and it was wider than when I first measured it: about .011-.012. This is in addition to the excessive side-to-side play in the crane caused by me tripping in my garage and wacking it on a step ladder on my way to floor (it was in my pocket at the time).

Anyway, S&W sent me a pre-paid shipping label. I dropped it off with FedEx at around 5 PM on 12/14. I got it back today, 12/23!!! :D

Both problems were addressed. To repair the play in the crane/cylinder assembly, S&W replaced the locking bolt. To correct the excessive cylinder gap, S&W replaced the barrel. The B/C gap now measures around .006. I would have preferred it to be around .004 +/- .001, but I can't complain. The only sad part is that I had a nice amount of holster wear on my original barrel, which gave the gun more character. Guess I'll just have to wear in the new one so that it matches the rest of the gun. Some fllitz metal polish in the appropriate spots might also do the trick. :p

So the gun is as good as new, and amazingly it took just over a week to do it, including shipping time! Gotta give S&W a big attaboy for a job well done!

Cleaning information

I am hoping to tap some of the experience on this site.

I have a S&W mod. 36 no dash in blue and a mod. 38 Bodyguard-no dash in nickel. The 38 is an airweight, the 36 is not.

First- what is the significance of the dash (s)?
Second- what can I safely use to clean both? Breakfree vs Hopps 9?
Minor scratches on the 38-- I think someone pocket carried without a holster. What should I use on it.

I am also thinking about adding either a 442 or 642 but cannot decide. They both look good. I may also look at the Ruger.

I know this may not be the place, but, I also have a colt 45 compact 1911. It is blued, I believe parkerized-- what is proper to use to clean that without damaging the finish.

Thank you and safe and happy holidays to all.

God rest ye merry ladies and gentlemen. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to Ye All. :D

No dash = first issue, then the model changes go on from there ie 642-2.

Stevemas,

No pics, unfortunately. The clear coat rubbed off a little from the friction points of the Nemesis holster (I don't believe they are from the Mika based on fit). The Nemesis is more snug than the Mika. The wear is on the right side of 642 at the rear corner of the top strap (essentially, where the rear sight groove begins on the starboard side), and on the left side below the plunger. Not enough to be a problem, but nice enough to show it's loved :).

Cheers, and Merry Christmas to all the Club!

Concealed Carry Clause came!

Yep... concealed carry clause stopped by the house... So what's the ruling, guys, am I in -even though it starts with a "4" ;)

Ha ha, I don't know about that! But I do hope to stop by more frequently in the future. Good to see everyone again.

But of course! They may look different on the outside, but they are the same afterall.

Thanks Camjr! Those are my two holster choices for my new 642, so just wondering.

And wow... I wish I would have tried a j-frame many years ago. Pocket carry with this little pistol is a dream!

Steve,

Minor correction. Semi-autos are "pistols". 642 is a "revolver".

Not a big deal, but some around here in some threads will call you on that point.

;)

Isn't it nice how easy it is to place your hand on the butt of the gun in an iffy, dark parking lot without looking out of place? And, God forbid you have to draw it, the rounded back strap just lets the little x42 slip right out of the pocket with no hang ups.

Thought I'd post some picutures of my 642 with it's recently acquired (Feb '09), older, bigger snubnose brother, a .38 Special S&W Model 15-2 made in 1965. My 642 now is a niche gun: pocket carry ONLY. And it excels in that role.

With a quality holster and belt, the Model 15 is actually easier for me to carry IWB than the 642 with a cheap belt and holster.

I love 'em both, and will never part with either.

Minor correction. Semi-autos are "pistols". 642 is a "revolver".

Dictionary definition:
1. (noun) pistol, handgun, side arm, shooting iron
a firearm that is held and fired with one hand

Pistol is a word in the English language and therefore dictionary defines usage, not forums.

Semi-automatic pistol is proper term if you want to identify type as separate from revolver or single shot. I carry a pistol, it just happens to be a revolver. We have to stop sounding like 4th grade drop-outs on these forums.

Well I just joined the club. A purchased a brand new 642 this afternoon and it will be in my possession on Monday after a short trip across the river to a local FFL. I have had a life long affair with J frames having 36, 60, and even a Charter Arms of similar size. Having got rid of my other J-frames in a moment of stupidity, I am glad to be back in the family again and look forward to this new purchase.

I have been following this thread for some time and was wondering if anyone had some info handy for me.

I remember reading about someone who had worked up a copy of the Speer Gold Dot 135gr SB load.

Does anyone have that info handy or a link to it?

Thanks.

dirtpig: I have the Speer 38+P 135-gr. JHP reloading PDF.

e-mail me. And do a search in the reloading forum for something like GDSB 38+P, or replica reload, or something like those terms....

Custom Holster w/thumb break?

I've been carrying my 642 CT in a Galco Speed Master for quite a while but now it's time for a change. I want a good leather hoslter with thumb break retention.

The Galco Fletch would work for me, if the retention straps reaches over my Crimson Trace Grips, but I'd like to hear some recommendations on a leather holster with retention for the 642.

RD checking in to wish y'all a Happy New Year!

I don't have a working camera to take photos, but I'll share this one from about a year ago. My trusty 642-1 goes everywhere I do - in a Mika pocket holster 99.9% of the time.
