OK,I'm a moron, let's get that out of the way.Lat night I took the ejector rod off my 642 to clean, lube and just play around.when I put it back,I couldn't close the cylinder. It won't scew in all the way.I'm not sure if I stripped the threads or what. The rod definately won't screw in far enough.I emailed s/w to see if they can send new parts,or if I have to send the gun in for service.THIS is why you need more than one carry gun.Back to the Bulldog, till I get this sorted out.In the mean time, while waiting to hear from smith, any ideas on what I may have done,or what I'm doing wrong?thanks

Hmm...Take it all apart again and start over looking at a diagram (Brownells or something) Its fairly easy to get a spring in the wrong order. If you used only finger strength to tighten it, I doubt you stripped anything.

You shouldn't a done that in the first place!

The S&W ejector rod/cylinder assembly should be considered just that, an assembly, and should not be taken apart by the owner.

It is torqued to a specif tightness at the factory, and in all probably will start giving you fits now that you have taken it apart.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it applies very well in this case.

Here is a schematic from brownells. It is difficult to put it together wrong but it can be done.
I sometimes remove the cylinder for a deep cleaning but never take the ejector rod apart for no reason.
If you put it together correctly, you should have no problems. Just study the schematic and your parts and you should be able to see what is wrong.

Let us know if you get it fixed.

rcmodel:thanks for the monday morning quaterbacking......NOW I know I shouldn't have taken it apart....
I called smith and wesson today..it's going in to them this week.they are sending a shipping label,so it won't cost anything to ship....not sure if they'll charge me for the repairs.....as it WAS my fault,I'll pay.Lesson learned....I guess I was just used to my Ruger revolvers where you can take them apart and put them back together all day long and have no problems.I guess a smith is like a Jaguar.

Revolver

Tony,
In case its not to late, Dale Nelson is a S&W armorer and works in Albany. Not hard to bung up the threads on an ejector rod, and they are reverse threads besides.

686

Tony,
9 years later and approx 80k rounds, I still have the 686. In addition I still have the EG modified 1911, custom shop xd-40, J-Frame as well as the 422 S&W 22 and the Ruger 41mag. I downsized a few years back and got rid of some guns I no longer shot.

I didn't realize they were sundays.....I'll make a few this summer then.I may even bring some "rebels" w/ me.I'm definately doing ICORE in april(barring a snow storm or mud bog situation at Watervliet)

aside from Missy,I don't know of any..maybe before my time..hey I got my 642 back already...a week and a day,not bad. They replced the ejector rod and yoke.free shipping, free parts and work, can't beat it.
A bunch of us took the "official RSO course" this weekend froma guy from s/w..a long day,but it cleared up some questions about the new rules.I'm looking forward to ICORE in april....how many rounds is it usually?is 4 pseedloaders enough?

Official SO training

I heard about the training and I am glad you took it. You at least got an unfiltered version of it. S&W service is top shelf. Better figure on at least 6 speedloaders for ICORE. The person who gave the class, was his name Ted or Harry? They are from the Down Zero league that shoots at S&W.

His name was Dr. John Kozlowski.a retired psychologist.Nice guy.Long day though. The actual shooting part went fast once he realized we had a clue.We learned some new stuff,w/ the new rules(2005)and some things we were doing wrong all along.all in all a good class.

Dr. John

No kidding, he is a great guy and has been around thier league since it started. Worked a couple Winter Championships with him, very down to earth.
