Agree on the Mavericks, I know there are much nicer options (now). The 686+ would be out of reach at the moment, at least NIB. My father has a Henry Big Boy steel in .45-70, I helped him find a load with IMR4198 pushing a 300gr HP. Definitely more oomph than my .30-30.

Well looking at what you already have I notice you don't own a 9mm. I'm of the belief that just about everyone should have at least one 9mm. pistol. Ammo is everywhere and still relatively inexpensive. Now you can get a decent shotgun in a Remington 870 Express (4 shot-$336 or 6 shot-$361 and you can pick up a spare barrel for it for hunting or trap shooting), and a nice 9mm with a Tristar C100 (a made in Turkey copy of a CZ75 Compact), for $366. Just a little over budget but you get two guns for the price of one.

Another gun I think most people should own is a .357 revolver, preferably a double action though nothing against a nice single action either. You can get a blued Ruger GP100 with a 4" barrel for $639, still under budget. A little less expensive but a pretty decent set-up would be a blued Ruger Blackhawk in .357 with a spare 9mm. cylinder for $593.

I finally came around to the 9mm way of thinking, but I still have a phobia or whatever about polymer guns. I got a TriStar S-120 about a month ago. All steel, $380 for a full sized pistola. OP, you should consider the 9mm for sure.

To try to cover all of the suggestions so far:

The CZ 527 is nice, to be sure. Guy let me try his at the range once. I've had 2 Maverick 88s now, the 14.5" LOP is a bit too much, though a bandsaw could remedy that. Thought about a SAA clone in the past, hadn't considered it this go-round. The Marlin was my first firearm, never to be sold, so a .357 lever might be redundant. Watching PSA for something with free shipping ($50 in tax and freight changes what makes a deal). Also like the 590, and I drive past a clays field every day, so I thought the HD pump would see some use there. And, I have already had 2 1911s in God's caliber. Shot them great, loved them, though a bit heavy for EDC, and don't really know if I would get as much use, considering the pistols I already have, compared to the other considerations.

So, great feedback all, thanks, and keep it coming, as these are all great points, many that I hadn't considered yet!
Have you considered either the Weatherby PA459 or SA459?
I got some ribbing about a pistol grip shotgun until we started shooting.
You have a definite hole without a 223, 22-250, or 243. As a hand loader, I would choose a 22-250 in 1-9 twist.

As far as range toys in .22LR go, I would also suggest looking at Colt for the 1911 style. Though not true 1911s, they have the feel, the look, and generally the expected quality. I have their Gold Cup Trophy, which I bought for $350, lightly used, and I like it a lot. But my real "range toy" in .22 is a Ruger Mark IV Lite, with a Vortex Venom atop, used in Steel Challenges. The same setup would run you right at the $650 you have. I'm currently having the most fun with that.

I'll suggest a Chiappi Double Badger in .22WMR or .22LR/.410ga shotgun, a very versatile firearm, and excellent quality at that, and also a 9mm is a must have pistol, and both can be had for just under $650.00 if you do a little shopping.

A 1911 in .22 was my thought on filling the .22 gap, though a bolt action would be nice, as well. There is a Heritage Rough Rider sitting in the cabinet, that my oldest occasionally lets me shoot. I used to have 9mm, but right before the first banic, I switched to .40. During the banic, I was glad I had. Now, I can load lead .40 almost as cheap as I can buy 9mm. I am thinking that I will be awkward without an AR, that I can get a slightly-above-basic one for ~$450, and either put the rest towards ammo and reloading supplies, or keep adding to it until I can also get some type of .22, 1911, or possibly a 9mm PCC. Still, a lot of good suggestions here, a lot to consider, and a whole lot of appreciation for you all taking the time to give me ideas. Some of the higher-end ideas are going in a suggestion box, as I also want to treat myself to a one-time 40th birthday gift in about a year and a half. THANK YOU!

CZ 527 American is next on my buy list, and is in your budget not including the scope. A distant 2nd is a 4 5/8 Ruger Blackhawk in .41 magnum, which is well within your budget plus enough for a set of reloading dies.

Considering that list of what you already have, I would get a .22 LR.

For a rifle, I'd be finding a CZ 452, the exact model to depend upon whether I planned to shoot it scoped only, or wanted the option for open sights.

For a pistol, I'd get either a Belgium Challenger or a Medalist. If for some reason a super-accurate and high-quality semi-auto wasn't what I wanted, I'd get an older Smith revolver, either a K-22 or 617.

I just sold my last AR. Built for varmint hunting (20" scoped), but I don't varmint hunt. I tried to use it as a bench gun, but pistol grips don't work for me, and a semi proved boring. So, I have $650 to find a replacement with. I currently own:

Marlin 336 .30-30
Remington 700 .30/06
Garand .30/06
Traditions Inline .50
Hatfield SAS 12ga
Springfield XD-S .40
S&W M&P .40

I am considering:
Mossberg 500 with the 20" 8-shot for HD
GSG/Sig 1911 for range toy
KISS AR carbine for HD
Bolt .223 to use my extra mags and reloads (didn't sell these, wife and oldest son each still have ARs)

My biggest concern is future legislation for ARs. Really want the pump 12. Could possibly stretch my budget on the used rack, and pick 2. Thoughts?

If that were my list I would, without a doubt, get a 22 and 9mm. But that has nothing to do with your questions. :D

But from what YOU said.....
I notice 2 things. You sold your AR's and you said you really want the pump.

If you don't mind used, you could probably get the 500 pump for around $200... likely less especially if you're looking for the basic 500 or consider the Mav 88 which can be had for barely over $200 new and the pretry much the same except the saftey. One other thing, if you go with the 6 shot youll have more barrel options if that's a consideration.

With the left over $$$, it should be enough to get a used bolt in a flavor that takes the AR mags or, if your want new, save just a little more and get a new one.

If you have extra AR mags and reloads, as others have said the .223 kind of fills a gap you have at the moment and I'd look at the Ruger American Predator (the version that takes AR mags) or maybe something from Mossberg's MVP line to use the mags.

I'm looking hard at the Ruger American Predator myself but leaning towards the Weatherby Vanguard Heavy Barrel ($399 sale at CDNN) and eventually dropping it in one of the Boyd's At-One stocks. Would be alot of rifle for the money and actually stay under your $650 budget.
