A friend died recently and several of us are helping "disperse" parts of his collection. Right now we are working on ammunition. Tonight we ran into a problem with a wooden box. The wooden box is labeled: "7.62 - 59, 780, 70/62 - bxn, 24 kg, tbpl/Fe, 3/62". My guess is this is either 7.62x51 NATO or 7.62x 39 SKS type ammunition. I'd like to know exactly what is is so we can sell it. If anyone knows if this is brass? Corrosive?

I seem to be limited to one picture so I included a picture of the wooden box showing the sealed metal ammunition can with pull tabs.

Thanks in advance

That's cool. I'd keep it as is and use it as a coffee table in the "man cave".

The "BXN" indicates manufacture by Sellier & Bellot. It normally has a green laquer coated steel case, a mild steel core and a tombac plated steel jacket with a silver painted tip. In my opinion, it's some of the best surplus light ball ever imported into the US. It's more accurate in my PSL than any other surplus I've tried, including VKT and Lapua.

It also has surprisingly effective terminal performance on hogs. The bullets seem to destabilize even faster than Mk VII .303 Ball with the aluminum or fiber filled nose and since they're traveling 400 fps faster, the effects are very dramatic for an fmj.

I don't think anyone has imported any of the Czech light ball in 8 or 10 years, I wouldn't be surprised if it fetched a higher price than the Soviet and Hungarian stuff that's currently being sold.
