Last week I was on the lookout for 7.62x39 for my AK. I went to 3 different gun shops in my town and none of them had any.

Odd.

So I waited until we took a road trip to Cabelas. Surely they would have some.

Nope. They had the big spam cans for $200 but nothing in single boxes.

What is going on here? Is 7.62x39 getting scarce?

It is everywhere around my neck of the woods for less than $3 for 20.

Thats robbery compared to around me!

My best ever deal on the stuff was at a gun show for exactly $5 per box of 20 (Wolf).
Now you can't find it for a dime under $6.

No signs of scarcity though here in Quinn-istan, quite a few with it at LGS and gun shows.

I have plenty of steel jacketed but nothing for indoor range use [lead]. Ordered some almost a month ago. still waiting.

Plenty around were I live, both at the LGS and at the gunshows. I checked a couple of places online and Wolf ammo in 7.62x39 seems to be out of stock at a couple of them. I did find Brown, Silver, and Golden Bear available at ammunitiontogo.com. Prices for 100 rounds ($21.95 to $24.95), were decent enough and comparable to what I have seen at the gunshows.

Guys, please. When you say "plenty around here" and don't have a location listed in your information, you don't really add anything to the discussion.

Try not to be 'internet commandos', and tell us where there is plenty.
Thanks,
RT

I know I could always order online. That's what I have to do with everything else here.

It's a common parts problem for me. Typically when I find that I have a gun that I can no longer find ammo in stores for it gets sold. I sent my glock in .357 sig down the road when ammo for that became scarce.

But this in an AK! The things are everywhere!

Cabelas in richfield wi had a ton of steel cased herter's brand a couple weeks ago. Picked up a bunch back in Jan when they had it for $3.99/20. I think its $5.99/20 now.

May be time for some of you guys to start reloading ( brass cases)

Well since the OP lives in Minnnesota, and I don't, it really doesn't matter where I live now does it. And the OP wasn't asking for any locations as to where to find the ammo; what he asked was is 7.62x39 ammo getting scarce. Try adjusting your reading comprehension skills before labeling other posters as "internet commandos"; whatever that means.

I also told him where he could find plenty of ammo online and gave him the name of one such place. So what exactly did you add to the discussion?

I've seen lots of 7.62X39 around central TX. In fact, all the shops around here seem to be well stocked on most calibers. I've really loaded up the past several months.

How about Cabelas for $120/500 rds or aimsurplus for $100/500 rds. I don't think anyone who says they have "plenty" is trying to be "internet commandos." 7.62x39 is one of the most popular calibers in the world. Believe me...there is "plenty" of it available

Reloading for my AK isn't practical. I live in a tiny tiny apartment.
Thats enough of that excuse. I live in a 1 bedroom apartment and reload for 30-06, .222, 9mm and .380. :neener:

On to your question though, there is plenty of it around here. Most of it is in the crooked gun stores though, charging 350 bucks for 1000 rounds of wolf. They think I'm stupid or something? I buy 7.62 and .223 in bulk either online or at gun shows. I print the list off from gun-deals.com and take it to the gun shows with me

Seems to be available both locally here in SD, and at every major online dealer as well......seems to be plenty to be had if you care to actually LOOK....as folr the "internet commando" crack.....unnecessary, and pointless.....7.62x39 is widely availble throughout all regions of the uS from what I can gather by what i see at shows, in the local market, in Shotgun News, and on nearly every major ammo dealers' websites. No need to post an exact location as its EVERYWHERE, especially if you are willing to order online
