thanks for all the help with my nagant 91/30.... i did sportorize it totally, and i hope corking it will improve the accuracy even with a synthetic stock..

I own 2 MN (isn't it funny how they multiply?) and find that shooting winchester ammo greatly reduces the ocurrence of week-long mosin shoulder, as well as shooting <1" groups at 100 yds with both the fmj and sp versions. this ammo is becoming easier to find, I wouldn't be suprised if Wal-Mart started carrying it. for those who know what their barrel slugs out at, the fmj bullets they use measure .310, and the sp bullets measure .3115

the best surplus rounds are the yugo 182gr fmj's from the 1980's. That Bulgarian stuff is very corrosive, anyone who shoots corrosive ammo through a nice surplus rifle does not deserve to own it.
That Yugo Heavy Ball is corrosive too. But yes it is good ammo, shoots great in my Finn Mosins.

i have several different ammos that i have and havent used yet. i have some 7n1, 147 gr hungarian, and some 174 gr brown bear. i have a russian 91/30 and have only shot the brown bear so far and it shoots very very well in my mosin. i sporterized it with new stock, scope, muzzle brake and it can group at about 4-5 inches at 450 yds.

Nice deer TR. Is that a M44 with the bayonet removed? Did removing it affect your point of impact?
I use Silver Bear in my Finnish mosins when I hunt with them. It brings them down okay. You can't beat the price either.

Almost all surplus 54R is has corrosive primers. There's no need to be afraid of shooting it, you simply take the proper measures to neutralize it and clean it out the same day you shoot it. I dose the bore with Mpro spray at the range, then do a complete cleaning at home. There are other homebrew mixes for neutralizing the salts, just do a search here. Also remember to clean the bolt and bolt face.

After I bought my Mosin I took her to the range. First to fire were 180 Grain Brass WWB for fireformed cases.

They shot 7-9" high at 100 yards. Next I fired some of my Bulgy and Some of my Rusky Surplus.

POI and POA became the same. There was no need for me to adjust the sights.

When I reload those brass cases they will have 150 grain bullets in them.

As for corrosive ammo, IMO a thorough cleaning afterward will do the job.

Hoppes #9 or Nitro Solvent will do it.

Recorded surplus accuracy tests - x54r

That I did with my M39's included the following.

Czech silvertip (50's era)- 3 to 4" moa, 5 shots, off sandbag, 100yards.
Russian steelcore lightball (1984)- 3" moa, 5 shots, off sandbag, 100 yards.
Hungarian steelcore lightball (1987)- 2-5/8" moa, 5 shots, bag, 100 yrds.
Hungarian leadcore heavyball (1951)- 4-3/4" moa, 5 shots, bag, 100 yrds.
Hungarian steelcore heavyball (1975)- 2-7/8" moa, 5 shots, bag, 100 yrds.
Hungarian steelcore lightball (1978)- 2-1/4" moa, 5, bag, 100yrds.
Bulgarian leadcore heavyball (1954)- 2-3/8" moa, 5, bag, 100 yrds.

Have shot Yugo surp which did well, but never measured group size.

New factory ammo -
Brown Bear both FMJ and SP did just OK. Bullets were .310dia., accuracy just so-so. Probobly good enough for hunting.
Wolf BiMetal 148gr FMJ- 2-7/8" moa, 8 shots, bag, 100 yrds.
PRVI Partizan 185gr FMJ- 2-1/16" moa, 5 shots @ 100 yrds, off a sandbag.

PRVI is my favorite, and I use the brass for reloads.
