I have an 870 that sometimes has a problem where the next shell won't get pushed forward. It feels like the magazine follower is stuck inside the tube and not pushing the shells forward. I have cleaned out the inside of the tube and can't feel any burs or anything inside. It is a gray plastic follower and I have an extension on the tube so it holds 8 shells.

More then likely, the rims on the shells already in the tube are catching on the extension tube joint.

Take it apart and bevel the leading edge of the extension joint so the rims can slide past it. While you are at it, bevel the leading edge of the factory mag tube too so shells don't snag on it while coming back the other way while feeding.

I bought it used and it came with the extension already installed and I assume the correct spring.

I can load it ok but when I load more than 6 shells it will sometimes jam when there are 5 or 6 shells still in the tube. When the fired shell is ejected a new one won't pop out of the magazine and stops about 1/2" behind the shell stop. I can push down and they move back, but they won't move forward. Either the spring or the follower gets stuck somehow.

I think it's a pretty old Express and there were no dimples as far as I know. It was duracoated before I bought it.

You probably have a small ding on the tube somewhere or something is floating around in the tube randomly jamming the follower.

That's your leading clue (see bold red text). Rcmodel is right - read post *7 then read #5. You probablly just need to tweak the extension tube coupling nut, but maybe you need to replace the whole extension assembly.

My initial guess would be the extension (is it factory or aftermarket?). Either that, or perhaps the spring is too weak and/or short. How long is the mag tube spring, btw? I am assuming you are using a +2 extension.

Before you start assuming the worst (mag tube), start with the simple (the spring) and go from there.

I had to adjust the extension tube on one of my 870s before. the spring would get hung up at the union of the factory tube and the extension. causing a jamb that wouldn't allow me to load to full capacity.

took it apart and played with it a bit. now good to go.

Its the major flaw of the Remington system---shells can easily get hung up at the junction of the mag tube and the extention.

Just the nature of the beast.

Part of why I switched to Ithaca for my HD shotgun---one piece mag tube.

I may be mis-remembering, but I don't recall reading about this problem with extensions other than the Remington factory extension. I have Nordic and Vang extensions and have never had an issue of any kind at all on 870s with these.

See post #5, #7, and #9.

O.K.!
One more time!

Bevel & polish the freaking sharp square edges on the tube & extension so the shell rims can't catch on them and the problem is solved!!!

I had the same problem when I installed an aftermarket extension tube on my 870. There are 2 (two) small bumps (or dimples, depending on how you look at it) on the inside of the factory mag tube that must be filed away. Since doing this mine has worked flawlessly. And it wouldn't hurt to bevel the edges that have already been mentioned.
