870 red dot mount

I have a Remington 870, got the urge to try out a red dot on it. I have an older NCStar red dot laying around, (used it on an AR for a while, switched to a circle dot), trying to mount it on the gun. Possible problem, I have a Scattergun Technologies ghost ring rear sight that might get in the way of mounts that attach by means of the trigger group mount pins. A couple of these might work, Mesa has a nice one with the shell holder but right now I have velcro and I attach elastic shell holders, (which I've used for a while, taken two classes with this set up), I guess removing the velcro would be necessary. My thought would be to mount a small picatinny rail, the NCStar has a lever quick mount, (if I don't like it or it dies, it comes off quick). I saw a couple that are designed to mount on the gun using Remington's 4 holes, mine isn't drilled and tapped so I would have to do that. The rail I've seen is much longer than I need although if I cut it in half, I hope two screws are enough, (the NCStar dot isn't real small), I guess a blob of epoxy underneath along with the screws would be enough, IDK. Open to ideas.

My hand sometimes bumps into the rear pin area of a saddle mount. Annoying.

Some have a " see under" option which seems silly, as its for using a bead sight as backup.

Also a saddle mount will rub the finish on your receiver.

Some folks like em. I dont.

My Stoeger tactical is drilled and tapped plus has sights. However a Sightmark M spec mini on the low pic rail (factory drilled and tapped ) blocks the use of the ghost ring sights.

May get Remchokes put in and run it for turkey.
Had to upgrade some stuff and havent fully tested it to see if I like it.

Its a beater IMHO, wasnt gonna thrash a Beretta 1301.

You could trade it for a new production 870. They are drilled and tapped for optics. In the long run that might prove to be the most economical and most desirable route. Any barrels you have for an older gun work with the new ones.

I doubt "trading it in" would be the most economical. If I can mount a small picatinny rail, I could mount the red dot. Yes I would have to drill and tap at least two holes. I could still buy a trigger group pin mount just to see if running the red dot is the way I want to go, if not, I'd have a mount to add to the pile of parts I'm not using...I could sell it I guess.

Don't stoegers use Benelli mobil chokes? My p3500 that I had for a bit used them. I've since gotten a Remington 870...

What year is your 870? If you take the trigger guard out and flip it over you should see a couple circles and one should be a year and one should be a month I believe. Sometimes people want an older one and it may be worth something to the right person. My Remington 870 came with a fully rifled cantilever mount barrel and I put a Leupold RDS on it with Weaver specific 34mm rings. I also got a 18.5 rem choke barrel for it as well and it's just got a basic bead with a fiber optic snap on cover thing on it.

I have thought about putting a rail on mine also . It would probably be pretty easy to do it yourself if you have a drill press and it probably wouldn’t cost much for a gunsmith to do it either .

My 870 is a turkey model. Ive thought about D&T but since a vent rib proly go w Meadow Creek rib mount.

Or just leave it. Dont need the red dot when I cant even call in a bird LOL

The Sight Mark reflex in my picture blocks usage of the factory irons. And IMHO it doesnt sit too high, or have much mass. Not sure ID trust any QD mount on a shotgun

Get this one machined for Remchokes and itd be my turkey gun ( since set up for optic ). Already measured bbl dims and its got enough for the choketubes.

Kinda fond of a simple Remchoke Superfull on turkeys. Low light, tucked in shadows, can screw up on a bird w just a rib. BTDT and it still burns LOL

DIY is cool, but screwing stuff up isn't.

Milling machine is the way to go.

Drill press and reg drill bits is just asking for the holes to be off location.
