8lb vs 1 lb

It might be a no-brainer: buy in bulk and put the savings into more components, but I'm concerned about storage. Eight pounds of powder will make about 14k rounds of pistol ammo. That's about 3 years for me, more if I start to ration it out. In rifle ammo, it's much less, about 1100 rounds, stll a few years' worth.

A handful of years ago with our last occupant of the White House, powder was a little scarcer than it is now. I was shooting highpower at the time and had two 5 lb jugs of RL15 on back order for what seemed like eternity. Once I finally got it, my interests shifted to pistol shooting so there it sits in the air conditioned basement until I get back into shooting rifle. Unopened, I expect it to last decades. Even the open can I have I expect will be good for quite a while. Buy in bulk. Take advantage of the savings. Powder (or primers) will not be cheaper after the next election in my opinion.

On that note, I need to place my next order for more HP38 and primers. :D

I did the same thing with Unique... I was down to my last pound so I kept hitting the gunshows. I found a new case of W231, bought that, Bass Pro finally got 1# Unique in, so I bought 4#, then I found an 8# of Unique and got that. I sold the W231, and now that I am using different powders... I’ve got 12# of Unique that’s setting idle. Oh, well.

Just as an FYI, in case you wanted to go with the method many of us suggested:

Graf’s current promotion is ‘Buy an 8LB jug, get a 1LB can free of the same powder’.

It’s like they were listening to us?!
I like Grafs. At one time, they would ship loaded ammo to residences in AK, and I bought all of my non-steel, non-to shotshells from them. They were $3-4 per shell, but at least I could get them.
