I have been shooting a lot with my Turkish Mauser and am about out of bullets and need to buy some more. I have IMR 4895 and IMR 4007 SSC powders. These powders have load data for lots of different types and sizes of bullets. I am not looking for expensive Barnes bullets and would be happy with just cup and core. What would you recommend for a whitetail hunting bullet? My LGS has Hornady 170 gr RN on sale - anyone use these? Any hunting shots would be open sights within 100 yards.

I have used Hornady 170 gr RN and 150 gr SP in my Turk Mauser and K98ks under H4895. Only used to punch paper, but worked well. My prediction is that you will have no problem taking a whitetail with either, especially within 100 yards.

I use a Noe 325365 bullet made of coww-water dropped, with a copper gc-blue lube. My granddaughter took a small buck with that bullet a while back.

Ive had good results with IMR4895 in the M70. Several loads with IMR 4007SSC did exceptional in the M700 with the 175 Sierras. P2000MR has been IMO phenomenal in the M700 with the 150's, 175's, and 180 Noslers. Most accurate powder so far in the Remington.

I've used the 170gr RN, and they will do the job without breaking the bank.
Check out http://www.grafs.com/retail/catalog/...ategoryId/924?, as they have 8mm Prvi-Partizan and Speer bullets at decent prices.

yip and yip

You might want to try the prvi 175 BT's. I bought 300 of them just havent got them loaded up yet.

I use 150 gr, imr 4320.i get 1/2 groups, and the deer I killed never knew the bullets were 150 gr, and I never had a deer run off either, My 8 mm is a killing machine,

Make em. I have a nice Lee mold for 8mm that I size and gascheck for 32 Winchester.

I have a partial box of lead gas checked bullets, I think about 175 grain +/- a few grains. I don't plan on using them and if you want them I'll send them to you. Send me back $5 or whatever the cost is for a small flat rate box.

8mm Mauser bullet selection

Sorry I can't help in terms of matching a bullet with the powders you are using, but I'll vouch for the Hornady 150sp and 170rn in that order. I have several K98's and over the past 14 years have fired about 25,000 rounds at the rifle range. I've run load tests on a variety of bullets and the Hornady 150sp is the most accurate 100-300 yds through all of my K98's. The best powder with that bullet has been Varget, 49.5 gr, COL 2.920 WLR primer in Remington brass. Like most of you I've been aware of the shortages so I've done some recent testing of powders with about the same burn rate as Varget; IMR 4064 and Vihtavuori N140 and both shoot pretty close to Varget accuracy. I4064 is still out there while I haven's seen any Varget or N140. Just a precaution in terms of having alternatives.

I also tested the Sierra 150 pro hunter and while not as tight as the Hornady 150sp, it's close enough. With my scoped K98's, I'll stay under an inch at 100 yds and all of the open sight rifles will consistently shoot 5 rd grps of 1.5"-2" grps at that range. With the Hornady 150sp and Varget. Anyway, here are the loads I've tested with the Hornady 150sp and Sierra pro hunter for what they are worth.

H150 sp Varget 49.5gr, I4064 48.5 gr., and N140 48.9 gr. 2.920
S150 Varget 49.5 I4064 48.5 N140 48.5 2.910
All with Rem brass, WLR primer. And my col is set based on readings from my Stoney Point gauge. The example below includes the S150 using I4064 48.5 and the squares are 1 inch.

8mm bullets...

Idlfh 7--I wanted one bullet for hogs and deer in 8mm--Want to hit those hogs like the hammer of Thor--So I tried the 200 grain Nosler Accubond. Haven't shot a hog with it yet, but have utterly ruined a deer's engine room. Nice and accurate, also--Out of my M48 Mauser with scout 'scope, I can get 1" groups. Though I must say that Rudy the Ancient's results with a 150 grain Hornady have me drooling in envy.
