8mm mauser

I've been looking at converting an 8mm Mauser military action to 30-06 so that I can have a better choice of bullets. I see the OAL of the 8mm is
3.250" where the 30-06 is 3.340''. Does anyone know if the 30-06 will fit the 8mm magazine without modification.

If you have a full length Mauser action, .30-06 length cartridges will fit.
You may need to rework the magazine, you may not.

Do you have any action, or are you searching for one?

I there were some mausers converted by Israel. I believe there is a notch in the receiver to allow for the longer .30-06. I dont own one, but believe this is the case.

just curious on what kind of 8nm mauser are you planning to do works on, and i know this subject has been beaten to death but if you have a collectible Mauser rifle such as Swede or German it would be wise to just buy a Savage .30-06 or such.

American guns like the Savage may be tough to come by in Australia.

I have the full rifle. It's in a sporting stock. It has no markings other than 1940 on the side of the action. It looks like it may have been cleaned of any country markings but it still has the stripper strip. I will take it out of the stock later and check for other markings.

I have shot it using FMJ and it shoots well and the action appears solid.

I good photo of the receiver from the top, left and right sides, and the bottom metal, and bolt face out of the gun, will allow us to be more certain whether it is a full length 98 action, or an intermediate.

Ok, I have the info. It's a German built carbine purchased by Yugoslav in 1944 and refurbished. It has Model 98 on the action not 1940 as I said earlier. The original markings on the receiver ring were removed when the refurbmishment was done. It's also got a Timney trigger which must have been fitted later. The barrel is in very good condition. The magazine is a standard size 3.315" so it is under 30-06 OAL of 3.340". Guess I'll have to leave it as a 8mm unless I mod the magazine, if possible.

put a picture up on here and more than likely i will identify the Mauser for you, i love old military firearms. Wartime K98ks if unaltered are collectible so i will advice you on holding on sportarization for now

A model 98/48 can handle the 30-06 through the magazine/action. I think you will have to use 180 grain bullets and smaller (factory ammo), and hand-load larger bullets to keep them short enough.

A standard length 98 will easily handle 30.06,.270 or .280 factory rounds. Colombian,Belgium M1950 and Mexican M1954 Mausers as well as a few others were chambered in 30.06.

oh, probably just a standard YC K98k, so as much as i would hate to say it since it's already in sporter stock rechamber it to your whim

That's why I'm not concerned about sporterizing it further. I wouldn't do this to my other more collectable military mausers.

If the stock is the only change made to it(no metal cutting),you can replace it with the proper stock if you so choose.
