Howdy! Does anything fit the description: Cal 9mm with a FIXED MAGAZINE (10 rounds or less) and a pistol grip?

I love my PC9, but I really want to get something with a pistol grip. CA laws prevent me from getting anything that I'm aware of.

Wait for the new Beretta carbine, it should be CA-certified soon. Takes M92(or 96) pistol mags. You could also get a Mech-tec carbine conversion kit for 1911's & glock pistols. Some vendors won't ship to CA, but it isn't illegal here per se.

You mean those 1911 carbine conversions don't make it an assault weapon? I thought that the pistol grip + detachable mag in a centerfire "rifle" made it an assault weapon.

Edit: from the Mech-Tech website:

Legal Alert: This product for sale to California dealers under limited conditions only. Although the product of itself is legal, the resulting combination with a pistol frame becomes illegal under California law. Please contact Mech-Tech for details relative to dealer sales in CA. At this time we know of no other states where the combination is not legal but we caution everyone to become aware of relative state and local laws.

No, the Storm is an assault weapon under CA law. It is centerfire, has a detachable magazine, and has a pistol grip. It has been banned "for your safety".

P7HVN, were you referring to the Beretta Storm or a new carbine model? I didn't see anything on Beretta's site about anything else.

Back to your original question, there IS a way-albeit long and complicated. First, get a CA legal AR-15 w/ fixed magazine. Then, buy a pistol caliber upper reciever for it. If i were you, I would stick with the PC9. I don't think giving up detachable magazines are worth a pisto lgrip.

Sorry, the Storm is a Catagory 3 (features) assault weapon under CA state law.

It's semi-auto, detachable mag. Which means if it has ONE 'assault feature" it's an AW.

The pistol grip nails it.

There are Storms in CA already, but only cops can have them (just like new AR-15s) For the first time, we have a very serious disparity of force going on WRT the civillians in law enforcement (and yes, they are still civillians).

There is also no 'approved list' for rifles in CA.

There is a CA certified handgun list however (must still not be an assault-handgun.)

Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought the pistol grip had to extend below the stock. With the Storm having more of a "thumb hole" stock with the stock connecting to the bottom of the pistol grip I figured it would be legal.
 :scrutiny:

I think the thumbhole stock is okay without a detachable mag. Like with a SKS you can use a dragonov stock because of the fixed mag. Mark

You obviously haven't tried this. The fixed magazine is for .223. A different magazine would need to be approved by CA DOJ (at great expense.)

Aforementioned method not recommended due to PITA factor. It's bad enough with stripper clips for the .223. I've never seen stripper clips for 9mm.:D

The People's Republik of California considers "thumb hole" stocks to be pistol gripped stocks... So NO Storms.

I'd keep the PC9, but I wouldn't be happy about it...

You're right, TechBrute. I didn't consider that. marklbucla , you're basically SOL until you journey back to the free states (like I will, someday, hopefully).

Natedog, given that you're in Bakersfield I'd assume that you're at least able to get a CCW...

And yet again, I get shafted because I'm in the City of LA!

I am a refugee from So Cal, myself.

In San Diego: $400K = 1050 sq ft, PITA HOA, annoying neighbors.

In Dallas: $400K = 4500 sq ft, decent HOA, don't really know if my neighbors are annoying or not, since the closest one is over 75 yards away.
Or: $55K = 1050 sq ft, no HOA, neighbors to talk guns with.

Take your pick. Same house for cheaper, or wayyyyy more house for the same money.

Sorry about the thread hijack.

Dude, I'd be leaving this summer to free land if it weren't for my girlfriend and family.

Don't forget the traffic, crime, pollution, and overall higher cost of living here.

Seems like nice weather and beaches attract foolish people. I can't explain the behaviour of California and Florida any other way. At least Florida has recognized the need for people to defend themselves from all the other wiedos ;)

Hmmm. The closest I can think of is the Mauser C96 Carbine.

A bit pricy, though.

Sorry, I guess I was a bit off base with my previous answer. The Fed law considers a thumbhole stock a qualifying loophole, but CA doesn't. Asked the people at the Beretta Shotshow booth this question today and none of them could tell me the status of the Storm in CA. They referred me to one of the RSR dist.s, who clarifyed the thumbhole situation. Also talked to Mech-tec today. They received a letter from the CA DOJ stating that the carbine assembly would be illegal if attached to the pistol receiver, but that the assembly in itself is legal in CA. Sorry about any earlier mis-information.
