P.S. The "fallback weapon" is the SKS-M--I keep 240 rounds loaded in magazines. Yes, this is SERIOUS OVERKILL for most situations, but since I have the magazines, why not keep them loaded? I'll also note that both my sons live with me, and would respond using the nearest weapon, if they heard gunfire.

Not overkill, just quite possibly the worst weapon to keep so many mags loaded for. SKS's of all varieties are notoriously (personal experience, second hand experience and common knowledge) unreliable with large capacity detachable mags, and are also slow to load with such.

An AK or AR is a whole different story.
