I read an unfortunate story about a NY Fire Marshall who was killed the other night, and the leading suspect is his wife. In the story, it mentions he was shot by his service 9MM revolver.

I know they make 9MM revolvers, but hadn't heard of them being used by any service (I'd guess due to the difficulty of using moon-clips). Do you think this article might have been correct, or is it more of a case where the revolver was probably a .38 special?

I think he probably was issued a 9mm pistol, but the news reproter is too dumb to know the difference. Folks in the news business aren't too bright when it comes to firearms - or for that matter, anything else. :banghead:

It's possible that the article is correct. It's also more than likely that the news reporter thinks that revolver is just another word for handgun, rather than a sub-category of handgun.
You know, kind of like how a rifle and a shotgun are the same thing because they are both long guns.

NYC Fire Marshals are police officers and are issued 9MM Smith and Wesson pistols.

NYC Fire Marshals are Peace Officers. Their function is to investigate crimes related to arson, they can and do make arrests. A good bunch of guys, the are picked from the ranks of the FD and becoming a Marshal is a prestigious thing. They are not very strict about firearms and don't have a standard as far as I know. I have seen Glocks, Beretta .380's, revolvers, etc. They are individually purchased and not "issued". The NY Media is not firearms literate and anything a Police or Peace officer uses is a "Service Revolver". Bill

The only 9mm S&W revolver I am aware of is the Model 547. Hasn't been made in a long time.

There was also the 940 (J-frame). However, I agree with the theory that the paper just used the word "revolver" as a general term for a handgun.

There is also the possibility that he owned and carried a S&W 9mm revolver. Not that I'm on the media's side, but is a possibility.

NYC police and corrections use the S&W 5946, Glock 19 or the Sig 226. I would assume the Fire Department's Fire Marshalls follow the same. The police and corrections issue the firearm, so more than likely the Fire Dept. does also...
