Howdy, folks.
I've been reading threads here and there about how 9x18mm Makarov is cheap if you buy milsurp. I've yet to find any. I can find Wolf, S&B, the different Bears and western ammo. Where is this alleged milsurp ammo and who do I have to talk to to get some?

Most of the milsurp Makarov seems to have dried up, along with the supply of pistols.

If you want to shoot your Makarov a lot, buy a case of ammo from one of the big shooting supply places. It's a lot cheaper than buying boxes in quantity of one. Wolf/Silver Bear/Barnaul, etc are all about the same and all function flawlessly in the Makarov--that's the kind of ammo that it was designed for. S&B is usually a little cleaner and IIRC has boxer primed brass cases, but you pay extra for it.

I used to get "green box" (it was a green box with Cyrillic writing on it that I have no idea what it said) copper-washed steel case Russian Makarov ammo from my local shop for $5.95/50. Those days are gone.

I stick to the Bears. My last order was for a case of the Brown Bear. I have several Makarovs, a CZ82, PA63, and P64. I love the round and the guns that shoot it. I typically shop around but have ordered from AIM Surplus, Wideners, and Ammo To Go. I typically pay around 7 bucks a box. As for the milsurp, god luck finding it.

With the Milsurp becoming harder to find, the Silver Bear, Brown Bear seems to work just fine.

Be advised that the Russians, in the 1990's, made a loading of 9x18 Makarov caliber for a different, locked-breech, gun. This stuff isn't readily available, but, who knows about the future. It shouldn't be used in the blow-back 9x18 pistols. The information was contained in an article in Shotgun News, on the Makarov.:)

Was that the loading made for the PMM( as well as the Stechkin APS's that were still in use by some of the OMN guys??)??

Yes, it is. While the ammunition isn't available in quantity to the West, it's only a matter of time before some enterprising Russian sells it as "surplus 9x18".

I wonder if we'd ever see a locked breech 9X18mm as a new design here in the states...maybe a CZ82 on 'roids, or a semi auto only renedering of the Stechkin...

I'll stick with S&B, my CZ 52 likes 'em, a Czech round for a Czech gun ( CZ 82).

There was a good stock of S&B milsurp out there for a while. I still see some turn up at gunshows. It's copper washed, with FMJ bullets and comes in 24 round boxes. Convenient enough for 2 mags for a CZ-82, or for 4 3 Makarov Magazines.

To this extent, I went in with a friend and bought 2 cases of the Wolf FMJ 95 Grain load. It goes bang, and is accurate enough. As for dirtiness, it's Wolf, so some cleaning will be necessary.

I have had one issue with Wolf. I had a squib round that deposited a bullet just past the feed ramp. It took a visit to the gunsmith to get it out. My first squib, but it had to happen sooner or later considering how much ammo I shoot.

Wolf and Bear are made at the same plant that makes Ruskie military ammo, but those brands are made and packaged for the commercial market.
So technically, no they are not surplus ammo.

i doubt that PMM ammo was ever exported - it was discontinued in Russia shortly after its introduction due to the dangers of firing it in older PM or APS pistol (yes, APS will not stand up to shooting PMM ammo, and will eventually have cracks in the frame sooner than later)

My Academy sporting goods carries it in their Monarch brand, made in Serbia. They also carry 5.45x39.

The Monarch shoots great in my PA63. It is not as hot as Wolf Military classic. Feeds fine and goes off every time, and for like 8 and change a box

PMM hasn't entered the US in any quantity as of yet. However, as there were several million rounds made. Unless it's a favorite of a small, ammo consumptive, group, it's possible that it will be surplused, and show up here. The article gave the nomenclature, and box markings.

Personally, I plan to just cut down a bunch of 9mm Luger brass and make my own 9x18 mak ammo. I've got everything to do it, just need to set my bench back up. I want to set up in the heated basement instead of the frigid garage.

Should be. Check the list. It's on the CA DOJ website. If you're from out of state, you just need to register it.

Gun shows will be your best bet for the MilSup and as alreadymentioned that is an "iffy" proposition. But even if it isn't MilSup you generally get the better prices at the shows. Yes there are some good prices in some of the catalogs, but you have to factor in the shipping charges which include the Hazmat, and when you do that your bargain is typically no longer a bargain.
