So Santa was very kind to me this year and is getting me a new Benelli Super Black Eagle although it will be arriving a little bit late. Well Santa needs to know what furniture I want on it. I really like the look of the walnut furniture with the blued barrel. However I will be taking this baby duck hunting and wonder if going for synthetic furniture would be better.

I mean I know synthetic may be a little better if I take it duck hunting, but does it really matter? I mean the walnut is so pretty!

I think if I went synthetic I would want the realtree one.

I have been duck hunting with walnut stocked Remington 1100s and/or 11-87s and/or 870 Wingmaster Magnums for 58 years, and the wood on the worst one still looks very good. The rest are excellent to like new. Yes it takes a little extra effort, but when I was using a synthetic stocked BPS 10 gauge I didn't throw it in the bottom of the boat either. I just consciously take care of my stuff. It has not inhibited my ability to kill waterfowl.

Is Santa bringing a Super Black Eagle, or a Super Black Eagle II? That makes a difference when it comes to furniture.

Synthetic stocks actually need the same field care as wood; they also need to be wiped down after a wet day in the blind. I you hunt ducks & geese a lot, (i.e., follow the migration down the flyways) the synthetic is gonna be the better choice. If you go out twice during the season, and clean the shotgun everytime after a hunt, the wood will be fine.

If it's new, it's gonna be an SBEIII, unless it's NOS.

You are correct it will be the SBE3, I didn’t think I needed to mention that since I said new but that was my mistake.

I don’t go that often once or twice a year at most. I would like to start going more but….

yeah but this is a situation where my brain is telling me the synthetic is the slightly smarter choice and I should do that because why not be as practical as possible, but my heart is telling me the walnut is just too beautiful to ignore.

Don't know if this matters but I have seen many camo synthetic stocks that did not age well, as they are basically painted on and wear away with use. May want to consider wood and use gun chaps or some other protection under harsh conditions.

I see I see keep talking! The more you all talk the more I become convinced the right choice is to follow my heart.... or maybe its just conformation bias.... either way keep talking! it is making it easier to decide.

I've never been a fan of synthetic stocks on shotguns, I'm sure that they can have there place, but there is something about nice warm looking walnut and dark blue steel. I would prefer a Beretta gas gun over a Benelli recoil operated action though, but I would never run any 3.5" shells anyway, got a 10 gauge for that with really nice walnut on it too.

I am partial to Benelli ComforTech stock; decent recoil reduction, and easy to tailor LOP in the field for different shooters.

Keep a good coat of Simonize or an equivalent wax on your wood stock and wipe it down thoroughly after every day of hunting and it will hold up well. Legions of waterfowl hunters used wood stocks in the worst of weather for over a century before the advent of synthetics and they outlasted (sadly) every Labrador, Golden or Chesapeake retriever that they ever shared their blind with.

Back when I hunted a lot of waterfowl, my experience was that the guns (and all the gear) takes a beating. There is always a wet dog knocking around and you’re either loading or unloading in the dark and mud, tripping over stuff, etc

Just as an aside - I am not much of a waterfowler, but my friends who are tell me that cleaning and oiling the action tube and action spring in their SBE I/II after each hunt is a commonly overlooked but critical maintenance task. I will assume that the same holds true for the SBE III.

You are going to enjoy it. I have an11-87 with a walnut stock, no issues. It's been on 100's of waterfowl trips. I shoot a Benelli Super Nova most of the time now. The grandson shoots a SBE3, loves it.

That’s great to hear! Is that you 2 in the picture? Y’all look like your having a fun day.

Man I just need to go somewhere I can look at both the walnut and realtree synthetic side by side. My LGS only stocks the black synthetics so I would probably need to have them order it either way. But man the synthetic also looks good in that pic. Maybe a big box might have both so I can see them side by side.
