My neighbors and I just spent the past 15 minutes thinking terrorists were bombing Southdale -- a large Mall (actually the very first indoor Mall) in a Southwest suburb of Minneapolis.

A string of booms went off every few seconds for 30-40 minutes -- driving many of my neighbors out to the street to see what was going on. One of my neighbors is up on a small hill and we could see flashes of light in the sky from his house.

We decided it wasn't thunder and there was no way that fireworks could be that loud and that sustained on a Tuesday night. Truck bombs? No one could hide that many trucks. Mortors? Too loud for that far away. We couldn't figure out how terrorists could get that many explosives so coordinated. It was like a string of bombing runs.

One of the neighbors finally got ahold of a relative who could see that it was fireworks. Apparently a Pyrotechnic Convention is in town, but they did not let any of us locals know they were going to put on a show. The police and every news station are flooded with calls.

Sept. 11 Eve seems like pretty bad timing for an unannounced extreme fireworks display, but the upside is that my neighborhood seems to be aware and ready to pull together if something happens.
