A sheath experiment.

I would like to know if a Cold Steel Bushman (the original, standard, 7" blade) will fit into a leather Kabar sheath, and if the retaining strap fits the handle. I figure there are a few of you out there that have both knives, soooooo maybe you wouldn't mind doing this little experiment for me? Pretty please? It's for science!

My Bushman is one of the earlier ones that came with an all-leather, pouch-type sheath. Which is not very good. AG Russell sells Kabar sheaths for about ten bucks, so I thought that might be a good replacement. If a little pricey, given the cost of the knife.

I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE GOING TO SAY. And yes, I could make one myself. If I wanted a really crummy sheath. I know my limitations.

You would have a little issue (judging from the picture). The middle of the blade is more curvy than the straight KA-BAR. But seeing as how it's only $10 I would say try it out anyways.

What is the width of the Bushman blade at it's widest point?

What is the diameter of the handle at it's widest point?

Need something to go on...

Sorry it took so long to get back to you...

Well, looks like you are out of luck on using that sheath with the Bushman.

"KABAR" pattern blades I have are 1 1/4" wide at the widest point. The KABAR sheaths I have would take no larger than a 1 3/8" wide blade.

The handle would probably work with that retaining strap though.

Word to the wise-don't force your Bushman into a too-tight sheath. You will only destroy the welts (the thick pieces on the side that protect the stitching) and ruin the sheath.

I'm sure you could find someone like Bladetech who either already has a sheath that would fit or could make you up something out of Kydex for a reasonable price.

You may even find a decent sheath making kit that you could use.

You could have Tom Krein or Mike Sastre make you a nice kydex sheath. Tom is a member here (Tom Krein).

I just saw this link in another thread (the Sharpfinger sheath thread...):

They have a kydex sheath already made for the Bushman. It is listed as $28 which includes shipping.

Of course, if it were me, I'd buy off a member here first...

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. I'll probably just put that knife aside for right now, maybe have a sheath made for it somewhere down the road.
