A Walmart adding guns

I'd still rather spend my money, even if it is a bit more, buying form the local shop rather than at a place where you're just a warm body and a number. Everyone whine about Walmart pushing out the Mom & Pop stores yet ill happily go there to save a couple bucks. That kid selling you the gun at Walmart probably doesn't know the difference between a scope ring and wedding ring. Is he gonna help when you need it later on? Is your LGS gonna be happy to see that Walmart bought rifle come into his shop when you need help with it? ;)
Nah, I'll spend the extra $ and support he local guy that knows my name. :)

Walmart here (Victoria, TX) has no handguns. Academy has three cases full of them. I check around the three local dealers for ammo and gun bargains. They all are pretty competitive.

The WalMarts will NOT be selling handguns other than pellet, bb, and paintball that they are already selling.

The WalMarts WILL be selling holsters (BlackHawk for sure, and other brands) - plus tactical gear'n'stuff for handguns, but again, will NOT be selling handguns.

Dont disagree, to some degree blkhawk73...... I bought a Henry lever action from a local gun shop earlier in the day. :)

Wal-mart isnt all bad though.

If Walmart has it cheaper I'll buy it there. I do buy a good bit of pistol ammo there. Living in Alaska gave me a different outlook on the local businesses. In Juneau all we had were local businesses. When Fred Meyer (A Pacific NW big box store) opened all the local businesses who'd been crying and trying to block them lowered their prices and stayed in business. They'd been gouging us for years and all of a sudden they could lower their prices and still make a profit. As for needing help for something I bought at Walmart! I doubt there's any gun accessory that I'd have to take back unless it was just plain defective and they're good about taking stuff back.

All of the Wal-Marts in the Baton Rouge area are going to start selling firearms again I'm told. Currently only two do. It will be longarms only.......so I'm told. Hopefully they will keep their paperwork in order this time.

I noticed blackhawk holsters in one of our local stores the other day but they are not the paddle holsters I like so good but some cheap nylon belt holsters in generic sizes. I have never been in a walmart in NC or TN that didnt carry long guns.

I just talked with one of the regular clerks at Walmart and he confirmed that they were going to be carrying firearms again; possibly sometime next month. But he also added that they were told this going back to last September, then it was going to be in November, then sometime before Christmas, and last he heard (before the latest rumor), was that they would be in this month. So I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

I've been gone a few days and was surprised to see so many responses to this.
I was at the Walmart in Republic, Mo. when I saw the new cases and signs that firearms were coming in soon. This Walmart used to sell guns years ago, but quit. I can remember when Walmarts started dropping guns, there was alot of buzz on forums like this that once they quit, they would never go back. I, for one, am glad we were wrong.
I still prefer to give my business to my local gun shop. But competition is good, and I'm glad Walmart is still in the gun business.

Here in the triangle, only the wake forest store currently carries guns. Hopefully some more will start carrying them soon.

Haven't seen any hint of a move back in the Omaha stores---the one in Council Bluffs IA still sells guns. And they're pretty close to me.

10/22's are pretty close in price anywhere you go.

Mossberg 500--Walmart $217-----Cabela's and Scheel's $299.99--------guess who's getting my money for my next shotgun?

With the customer traffic Wal Marts have, they are losing business dollars to stores like Academy, Cabelas etc. here in Texas. It does hurt the small business man but the small business man has been sold down the river by Congress a long time ago. If economy gets much worse(it will), then it may not be worthwhile for W.M. to carry them if they aren't selling. I do like the availabilty of ammo and other accessories though, because I feel we are going to need it, if you don't already have your ammo stash.

I kinda miss the days when Wally World sold handguns.... Oh well....

My Wally World dont carry much of anything (small town) and they quit selling guns a bout 3yrs ago. I dont see them doing an about face. No other options within 30 miles means I have to travel to even look at, much less buy, firearms.

Who cares what the reason is that Walmart can sell gun stuff cheaper than anyone else? I'm looking for a deal and I gravitate toward the lower prices. It's true that generally the clerks at the gun dept don't know much about guns but that's your responsibility. Do some research before you go and you won't have to ask them any complicated questions when you get there. I've bought many rifles from Walmart and the closest anyone else has ever come is $60 bucks more for a rifle. In my book, $60 is a good chunk of change and in that case I can't afford to "support the LGS." The only thing I have against Walmart is that they don't sell reloading equipment, at least, not around here. If they start, I'll be right there! Our Walmart here in town doesn't sell guns but if you go 40 miles south west of here to the other Walmart, they do. It's always been worth it to drive there as opposed to buying anywhere else, even with the gas money you spend.

I try to support my local gun dealers but when they want $90 for the same box of ammo I can get at Walmart for $64, well, I guess loyalty has a price too.

I used to work at a marine distributor who sold some stuff to Wal-Mart. Most goods they sell come from their own warehouse system. Individual store managers have the authority to buy from "local vendors" items not available through the warehouse when they feel their market has a demand.

If a manager can get permission and go through the FFL hoops he can put in a gun department. I will say that W*M puts a lot of price pressure on it's vendors so it can compete with the gun stores.

Is there an online directory which you can search to find out which Walmart's sell guns?

I was recently shopping in a Walmart in a small town in Va. They not only had a decent amount of long guns, they had a good supply of reloading supplies. Pwdwers, primers, bullets and dies. Never saw that in a Walmart other than this one. I am going back for some H335!

The Walmarts that sold guns used to keep a catalog of guns that could be special ordered under the counter for customers who requested to see it.
Dick's Sporting Goods has one too.
Dick's will often run specials that you hardly ever see Walmart do unless a gun is damaged or a special order that didn't get purchased for some reason.

Everyone whine about Walmart pushing out the Mom & Pop stores yet ill happily go there to save a couple bucks.

Any gun store put out of business by the paltry selection of boring guns that Walmart stocks probably wasn't worth visiting in the first place.

These days I find better prices on line at places like Bud's Guns, than I do at Wal-mart or my local gun store. Even counting shipping and the transfer fee.

When Wal-Mart opened in Durango, Colorado, you'd think it was the end of the world. Strangely enough, all those mom & pop shops are still open, but milk is no longer over $5 a gallon. Heck, we used to drive to Farmington, NM (about 40 miles) just to shop, because it was so much cheaper.

Be advised: Many things are made specifically for Wally World and other huge chains (Home Depot, etc) are their own model, and aren't necessarily the same quality as those sold elsewhere. If the model numbers aren't identical, the item isn't identical. A friend bought a welder from Home Depot, and when he called for warranty repair, the tech told him it was a Home Depot-specific model, and wasn't as powerful as the regular model. If you're price-shopping, make sure the items are identical. I don't know if this applies to firearms or not, but this seemed to be the right place for it.
