So, I've decided (again) what I'm going to get to finish my collection. What is a well rounded collection? If you have what you'd call a complete and well rounded collection, please post it.

.22 - Ruger mk-whatever (a .22)
9mm - CZ SP01 (because it's everything a 9mm should be)
.40 Kahr T40 (primary ccw)
.45 Auto Ordnance 1911 (a 1911)
.357 Ruger SP101 (secondary ccw)
.50 Desert Eagle (it's big, powerful, accurate... It's a Deagle)

A well-rounded collection is one that provides all the tools to do whatever shooting you like best. Don't buy something just because you don't have a gun that fills a particular niche, unless it's a niche that you personally enjoy. Otherwise, you'll forever be identifying some firearm for which you don't have a representative specimen. As individuals, we're not the Smithsonian, and we're not about building a collection for the ages (most of us anyway). So, in other words, just get what makes you feel happy and don't worry about "well rounded."

Noticed that this was under handguns, in that case I would say a well rounded "collection" would include a nice revolver, a nice 1911, a .22 for target use.

If you carry, a pocket pistol and an everyday carry piece for when you are wearing more than a tank top and swimtrunks.

my 2 cents.

I second the need for a (or some) big bore revolvers. I'd start with a 44Mag (S&W 629 or Ruger RH/SRH) or maybe a 41Mag (I like the underdogs and the 657 is a great gun). Then add something meatier, say a Ruger Alaskan 454 Casull or a Magnum Research 475 Linebaugh.

how many guns are enough? ONE MORE!

You'll never be done... thank God! what fun in a hobby with a dead end!?!

I think a "Well Rounded" collection should basically start with filling your personal preferences in the basic categories of firearms i.e., rifles, shotguns, handguns... once you've got a representative for each then you can expand the categories for instance, you started with a 1911 clone, a Mossberg 500 and a Marlin .30-30...so maybe a revolver or a side by side shotgun or perhaps a bolt action rifle... Have fun with it along the way and don't be afraid to get quirky with it once in awhile and pick up that Marlin 336 in .35 Remington...

This! Totally agree there, get what you like. I have a bunch of pretty much unfired weapons because they're not what tickles my fancy and they're all slowly being traded in and sold off for something that I like.

Don't you just love the fact that the gun community is so diverse.

I do not see anything that you have that I want (except the 1911)
Probably you would not want much in my stable either.

I say this so that you know that we are coming from TOTALLY different perspectives.

All that said
a deep carry gun would be nice (Kahr P9 perhaps)
a snub nose (j frame)
everyone needs a 4 inch revolver like a 686

Well, my handgun "collection" isn't complete yet, but this is what I'm currently working towards. I think it's pretty well rounded.

  • .22 - S&W 617 w/6-inch barrel
  • .22 - S&W 317 Kit Gun w/3 inch barrel
  • .357 - S&W 686 w/4-inch barrel
  • .357 - S&W 649 w/2.125-inch barrel
  • .45 - Glock 21
  • .45 - Glock 36
Still need the Kit Gun and the G36. :p

A well rounded handgun collection for me, and for the typical recreational shooter/collector might be:

1. A full size, double-stack semi-auto in 9mm, .40, or .45 (Beretta 92FS)
2. A target .22 semi or revolver (Ruger MKIII)
3. A big-bore single-action revolver (Ruger Super Blackhawk)
4. A concealed carry revolver or semi (S&W 642)
5. A 1911 Government in .45ACP

With the first 4 on the list, you've got home defense, target shooting, handgun hunting, and concealed carry all covered. The 1911 is there just because every serious handgun shooter must have at least 1 in their collection, and that is not negotiable. :neener:

I think this really depends on what you want your collection for. Below are several options

1. Well rounded to have examples of WWI & II firearms
2. To have examples of the big iconic firearms (Win 94, 1911, Win 70, Rem 700, etc)
3. To have examples that let you plink, defend yourself, hunt.
4. Cowboy era firearms

If I had to do it again, the collection would likely be very different. Pistols would be based on self-defense with caliber consolidation, rifles based on what I like (lever actions) and caliber consolidation, shotguns on self defense & clay sport shooting.

My big thing is to just minimize the cartridges I need to keep. I'd probably come up with something like below ( don't have many of them now). Also, I'd get more than one so that if one breaks, is stolen, lost, etc I'm not without. I'm also a big fan of buying spare parts for things that are likely to break.

Pistols
Sig 220 x 4 in 45 ACP (two is one, one is none)
XD carry size in 45 ACP x 2
Glock 27 x 2 in 40 cal (grrr, different caliber, it woudl really depend if I could carry in CA. If not, I wouldn't purchase them; I'd also give serious consideration to their subcompact 45 ACP or likely consider an XD in 45 in subcompact).

Rifles
Marlin 336 in 30-30 x 2
1894 in 45-70 x 1
now that the lever gun fix is done ...
a good Scout rifle in .308
M1A in .308
Blaser 93 in .308

Shotguns
Mossberg 590 x 2
Mossberg 500 x 2

In terms of calibers, I'm down to 45 ACP, 40 (maybe), 30-30, 45-70, .308, 12 gauge.

Yes, I skipped a 22 LR. Don't get me wrong, I love them and have shot them a lot. These days, my biggest limiting factor is time. As such, when I shoot, I'm not too concerned about ammo costs.

Why bother?

The only way to build a "well rounded" collection is to buy a bunch of crap that your only 1/2 wild about... Stuff that you only LIKE instead of LOVE.

Why not buy MANY example of 3 or 4 kinds of guns?

I like rimfire rifles and DAO pistols.... so that's what I buy.

Current
.22 Ruger Single six (6.5")
.22 H&R 949
.22 Ruger Mark III 22/45
.9mm Ruger P95
.357/9mm Ruger Blackhawk (6.5)
.357 Ruger SP101 (2.25")

Next (in order)
.9mm Kel Tec P11
.22 GSG 1911
.357 Ruger GP100 (4")

I want to stay within the .22/.9mm/.357 range. I don want to have to fool with more ammo

Too, Too many to count, one safe in the house and 3 at the inlaws. I always tell myself that I have everything that I want, until I see some thing else. You can never have too many guns,
