Chapter 1: A Fresh Start
Richmond, Virginia 9:15PM
Lisa Winters slowly rinsed off the dishes from the evening meal as she casually stared out the kitchen window. Rain slowly streams down the window of their new Richmond apartment.
"This storm doesn’t look like it is going to let up any time soon." She yells to her husband.
"The news said that there is a tropical storm moving through the area, they are expecting a few outages in parts of the city." Bryan calls back as he opens another moving box.
It is late September, the young couple just moved from Washington DC to Richmond, Virginia. Bryan left his aerospace engineering job at Wallops’ Island to take a senior engineer position at a new aerospace company called Corsair Concepts. It was an ambitious move for someone only 26 years old.
She puts the last plate into the dishwasher before heading upstairs to change.
“Which box did you put the flashlights in?” Bryan calls from downstairs
“Ah…..they should be in the box with your tools”
“No I already looked in tha….here they are.” He exclaims as he pulls two Maglites from the box.
He smiles as he looks up towards the staircase and sees Lisa return from upstairs wearing a green wool sweater and cotton pajama pants with little turtles on them. It is unseasonably cold, which is intensified by the storm. She hops onto the couch and turns on the TV.
“Don’t be TOO eager to help” Bryan jokes as he throws one of the pillows at her.
“I don’t want to exert myself; I have my interview in the morning at MCV.” She grins
Lisa had just finished her Bachelor’s degree in nursing only a few months earlier, and with their move decided to apply at the local hospital.
“There is civil unrest this evening in the Nation’s capital after the Tropical storm Perry left several areas without power.”
Bryan moves to the couch and watches as images on the television show the National Guard in riot gear trying to subdue a crowd looting stores. A few people were carried away on stretchers with bloody bandages over parts of their body.
“I swear I don’t know what gets into people sometime” Lisa says as she shakes her head.
“See aren’t you glad we moved now, a new city and a new begining” Bryan says and kisses her on the forehead.
“Sometime early this afternoon large groups of people began wreaking havoc on Washington, the National Guard was called in to quell the uprisings.“
Bryan grabs the remote and turns off the TV. “I think we’ve had just about enough of that, I think we should go to bed. We both have big days tomorrow.”
He grabs his wife’s hand and the two retire to the bedroom.
Woodlawn, Northern Virginia 10:27 PM
Sergeant Chris Jacobs of the Woodlawn Police department is mixed in with other Police officers and members of the National Guard as they try and suppress what is the most violent riot he has ever witnessed. The mob is full of bloody people, some of which seem not to realize their wounds. “Hold the line!” one of the Guard officers calls as they launch tear gas into the group. It seems to have no effect as the riot presses forward. Jacobs is armed with a Remington 870 patrol shotgun loaded with XREP tazor rounds. “Get ready!” . Jacobs aims his shotgun between the door and body of his Crown Victoria police cruiser. The violent group overpowers the police blockades as the officers begin to fire their non-lethal ammunition. As the riot pushes through the police lines he watches horrified as the people attack the officers. Jacobs yells to his partner “What the hell is wrong with these people!” The radio cracks and he hears the order to use live ammunition. He looks up just in time to see his partner get bitten on the neck. “Luke!” He tries to reach his partner but the blank stare shows the life has already gone from his body. His killer turns and looks at Chris with blacked bloodshot eyes and begins to approach him. Chris loads a slug into his shotgun, takes aim, and fires.
Richmond, Virginia 6:00 AM
Beep Beep Beep. Bryan smacked the alarm clock and turned off the alarm. 6:00,
“Come on Lisa, time to get up.”
She grumbles and rolls back over. He grabs the blanket and pulls it off her.
“Hey!” she yells and shoots him a dirty look.
He jumps on her and playfully kisses her until the agrees to get up. The two shower and begin to get dressed.
He puts on his Grey Citizen Eco-drive watch and looks at himself, Lisa walks over putting in her final earing and looks at him through the mirror.
“How do I look.” He asks
“Stunning” She replies as she adjusts his tie.
The two eat breakfast and leave for work. They walk to their cars together and Bryan hits the unlock button of his new Jaguar XK8. The car beeps and Lisa shoves him. “You spoiled brat.”
Bryan grins, “Perks of the new job.” He kisses her and opens the door to his car. She is about to get in her Scion when she yells to Bryan, “Now remember I might be late, if I get the job they are going to start me on my first shift tonight." He smiles at her and nods.
Turn Right on Airfield Drive. The electronic voice of the cars GPS says and Bryan pulls up to the Corsair Concepts building at Chesterfield County Airport. He takes one last look in the mirror, takes a deep breath and gets out of the car.
He walks into the lobby of the small company’s hanger/office facility. It has white marble tiles with light gray wall paper. The reception desk is made of a coffee color wood. There is a skylight above the center of the lobby flooding everything with what little sunlight there was on the overcast day. His footsteps echo as he walks up and is greeted by Courtney. She is the receptionist and daughter of the company’s founder, Elliot Koffman. She is drop dead gorgeous with blue eyes and light blonde hair, a real heart breaker. She is wearing a fuzzy white camisole and a short black skirt which showed off her amazing legs.
“Hi Courtney, My name is Bryan Winters, this is my first day and I’m suppose to meet with Mr. Koffman.”
“Right this way.” She smiles.
The two walk down the hallway to a large conference room where several employees are eating doughnuts, she taps Elliot on the shoulder, “Daddy this is Mr. Winters your new employee.”
He whipped the icing off the side of his mouth and mumbles, “Nice to meet you.” in between bites. They shake hands and begin a tour of the facility. They end the tour with the engineering/manufacturing facility. It is a large hanger where the company builds their small civil aviation composite aircraft. The signature feature of each plane is the inverted gull wing like that of the F4U Corsair WWII fighter, hence the companies name.
“This is where you will be working” Koffman says as they walk up to an area covered with CAD blueprints, multiple computers, a light table and a full size plotter. Bryan notices across the hanger that Courtney and another female employee are whispering to each other looking at him. He gives them a smile and they giggle. As Elliot Koffman explains his first assignment their attention is drawn to the TV in the hanger with a special news brief. Everyone seems to stop working as the volume on the TV is raised.
“…This is the first time since the sniper attacks of 2002 that the city of Washington DC has been closed. National Guard units and the United States Army have been called up and a full scale blockade has been set around the city. No one is being let in, or out due to these violent outbreaks. Similar riots have been noticed in other parts of the country including Los Angeles, Chicago and Atlanta. The president has declared a state of emergency, and is being flown to an undisclosed location. We will return with more updates as we receive them”
“As if we didn’t have enough to worry about from other countries.” Elliot says as he shakes his head.
Washington DC 12:30 PM
Sergeant Jacobs is speeding down a back alley in his police cruiser with another officer Mark Doyle. “What the hell are these things?” Mark asks as he reloads his service revolver.
“I don’t know, they are people…but….but they are acting like cannibals.” Jacobs relpies
This is dispatch all units are requested to regroup at your respective pricents and await further instructions.“Everyone back to base? How can we help protect our people if no one is going to be out on the street.”
Jacobs looks out the window, “At this rate, if we stay out much longer, there wont be anyone left on the street.”
