I found an 8lb. container for $50 and was going to use it to load some .45 acp. Anyone else here use this and if so do you have any loads?

Thanks
Brian

Thanks Morgan, I'll be shooting these out of a Tactical. Is there a difference between +p and Super for a .45?

To answer the question, #5 is a great powder for loading the 45 ACP.

BigSlick,

I usually get more round to round variation with #5. What machine/powder measure are you using?

David

I have a Lee Progressive that is on loan from a friend. He had some Solo 1250 that I used to load about a hundred rounds with. I just found this deal on the No. 5 that I couldn't pass up.

What machine/powder measure are you using?

Dillon 550B, stock Dillon powder measure, Dillon carbide dies.

I prep all the brass, fill the tray with bullets, full primer tube with Winchester LP and rock and roll.

I ran about a dozen groups of each load over the chrono, all with nearly the exact same results S.D 12.8, 13.1, 13.4 etc, ES all between 28-38 fps. except one, it was 6 fps ;)

The 6 fps batch was all the same headstamp (Winchester) brass, the others were a mix of everything including PMC, Speer, IMI, Federal, MFS, TZZ, IMI Match and the list goes on.

I mic'ed some of the different headstamps for case length, they were all over the place. Up to ten thousandths difference between the extremes.

FWIW, it all went bang and accurancy was good even for me shooting offhand.

IronEagle - there is a huge difference in pressure between +p and .45 Super. I believe the .45 Super brass is also thicker, but I haven't studied or seen any - do some research before going overboard. Personally, I see no reason to go higher pressure or velocity than what I posted.

You should get slightly higher velocities from a Tac - I'm going to chrono some rounds back to back from a USP45 and my Tactical, and I'll post back with the results.

I'm also going to test some 200gr Montana Gold bullets soon - yet another post for posterity on the way.

Have fun and stay safe!

I should weigh out a hundred or so charges and see what the distrubution ends up being. Maybe Dillion will exchange powder measures with me if it is the problem.

A small gun store is going out of business. He has an 8lb. of No. 5, an 8lb of 2700, and various boxes of small pistol and large rifle primers. Not a whole lot left to pick from.
